The Icelandic Basketball Association (''Icelandic:Körfuknattleikssamband Íslands - KKÍ'') is the national governing body of basketball in Iceland and is a member of the continental association FIBA Europe and the global International Basketball Federation (FIBA). It directs and oversees all of the national basketball teams of Iceland, including both the junior and senior national teams of both men and women. It was founded on January 29, 1961 and its first chairman was Bogi Þorsteinsson, but current chairman is Kristinn Albertsson. Iceland Men's National Basketball Team
The Iceland men's national basketball team () represents Iceland in international basketball tournaments. The team is controlled by the Icelandic Basketball Association. Iceland has qualified for the EuroBasket three times in their history, with the national team making their first appearance in 2015. They have also participated at smaller European tournaments, such as the Games of the Small States of Europe. Recent history EuroBasket 2015 On 28 August 2014, Iceland qualified for the EuroBasket 2015, entering the finals of the top European competition for the first time in its history. The national team though didn't fare too well in their maiden voyage at the EuroBasket. Finishing (0-5) in their Group B pool, played in Berlin with defeats at the hands of Germany, Italy, Serbia, Spain, and Turkey. Guðbjörg Norðfjörð
Guðbjörg Norðfjörð Elíasdóttir (born 8 April 1972) is an Icelandic former basketball player and the former chairman of the Icelandic Basketball Federation. As a player, she was named the Icelandic Women's Basketball Player of the Year in 1999 and was a seven-time selection to the Úrvalsdeild kvenna Domestic All-First Team. Guðbjörg won the Icelandic championship three times and the Icelandic Cup four times. She was a member of the Icelandic national basketball team from 1990 to 2002. In 2001, Guðbjörg was voted as one of the twelve players on the Icelandic team of the 20th century. Ólafur Eðvarð Rafnsson (7 April 1963 – 19 June 2013) was the president of FIBA Europe from 2010 until 2013. He also served president of the Icelandic Basketball Association from 1996 until 2006 when he was voted as the president of the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland where he served until 2013. Kolbeinn Hermann Pálsson (born 26 November 1945) is an Icelandic former basketball player and a former member of the Iceland men's national basketball team, Icelandic national team. In 1966 he became the first basketball player to be named the Icelandic Sportsperson of the Year. He served as the chairman of the Icelandic Basketball Association from 1988 to 1996. Helgi Ágústsson (born 16 October 1941) is an Icelandic former diplomat. He was the Ambassador of Iceland to the United Kingdom from 1989 to 1995, the Ambassador of Iceland to Denmark from 1999 to 2002, and the Ambassador of Iceland to the United States from 2002 to 2006. During the Cod Wars in the 1970s, he worked for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (Iceland), Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs in London. Einar Bollason
Einar Gunnar Bollason (born 6 November 1943) is an Icelandic former basketball player, coach and TV analyst. As a player, he won the Icelandic championship six times with KR. In 2001, he was named to the Icelandic basketball team of the 20th century and the coach of the 20th century by the Icelandic Basketball Association. In 2020, he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Falcon from the president of Iceland. Early life Einar was born in Vesturbær in Reykjavík.
