Körfuknattleiksfélag ÍA (), commonly known as ÍA, is a basketball team based in Akranes, Iceland. It is a subdivision of the sport club Íþróttabandalag Akraness. Its men's team played in the top-tier Úrvalsdeild karla from 1993 to 2000, making the playoffs in 1994, 1997 and 1998. Its women's team played one season in the top-tier Úrvalsdeild kvenna during the 1995–1996 season. Men's basketball In 1998, the team became the first 8th seed to defeat the 1st seed in the first round of the playoffs, when it defeated Grindavík 2–1. Recent history On 22 November 2018, American Chaz Franklin scored a career high 53 points in á 94–123 victory against Leiknir Reykjavík. Akranes
Akranes () is a port town and municipality on the west coast of Iceland, around north of the capital Reykjavík. The area where Akranes is located was settled in the 9th century; however, it did not receive a municipal charter until 1942. History Akranes was settled in the 9th century by the brothers Þormóður and Ketill, sons of Bresi, who came from Ireland. The town started to form in the mid-17th century as a fishing village. In 1942, it was formally chartered, and in the following years it had the biggest surge in population in its history. ''DV'' (''Dagblaðið Vísir'') is an online newspaper in Iceland published by Torg ehf. It came into existence as a daily newspaper in 1981 when two formerly independent newspapers, Vísir and Dagblaðið, merged. Early on it was one of the largest newspapers in Iceland and at one point had a 64% readership in Iceland. In the 1990s its readership started to dwindle and in 2003 its publisher was declared bankrupt. It was resurrected a week later by the publisher of Fréttablaðið. Valur Women's Basketball
The Valur women's basketball team, commonly known as Valur, is a basketball team based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is part of the Valur multi-sport club. In 2019, it won its first national championship. Recent history Valur played in the 2018 Úrvalsdeild finals, losing to Haukar 2–3. In April 2019, Valur won its first ever national championship when it beat Keflavík in the Úrvalsdeild finals 3–0. The team opened the 2019–20 season by defeating Keflavík, 105–81, in the annual Icelandic Super Cup. It was Valur's first Super Cup win and the victory made them the holders of all four major national crowns, the others being the national championship, the national cup and the league championship which is awarded for the best regular season record in the Úrvalsdeild. Terry Acox
Terrance L. Acox (born 1969) is an American former professional basketball player. Professional career In September 1992, Acox signed with Körfuknattleiksfélag ÍA in the Icelandic 1. deild karla where he became an instant fan favorite due to his 50-inch vertical leap and high flying dunks. On 29 November 1992, he broke the backboard with a dunk during a game against UMFB in Bolungarvík with 11 minutes remaining. With no replacement backboard, the head referee of the game, Leifur Garðarsson, decided to continue the game using the side baskets and forbade both teams to dunk for the rest of the game. In February 1993, Acox was selected to the Icelandic All-Star game where he scored 26 points. He also participated in the dunk contest which he went on to win convincingly. Pavel Ermolinskij
Pavel Ermolinskij (born 25 January 1987) is an Icelandic basketball coach and former player of Russian descent, a member of the Icelandic national team. He played in the Spanish Liga ACB for several seasons, winning the Spanish King's Cup in 2005. As a player, won the Icelandic championship eight times, seven times with KR, in 2011 and 2014 to 2019, and in 2022 with Valur. Terrence Watson (; born March 3, 1987) is an American-Israeli former professional basketball player. A forward, he played college basketball for Mott Community College, University of Mississippi and Ball State University before playing professionally in Iceland, Israel, Finland, and the Philippines. Milton Sylvester Bell (born August 21, 1970) is an American former basketball player. After playing college basketball for the Georgetown Hoyas, he went on to play professionally in Europe and South America. High school Bell played basketball at John Marshall High School in Richmond, Virginia. Marvin Kurk Lee (born June 3, 1967) is a retired American professional basketball player. He spent one season in the NBA, for the New Jersey Nets in 1990–91. He won three straight Finnish championships as a member of Torpan Pojat from 1996 to 1998 and was named the Korisliiga Foreign player of the year in 1997. Ívar Ásgrímsson (born 11 April 1965) is an Icelandic basketball coach and the former head coach of the Icelandic women's national basketball team. He led Haukar to the national men's finals in 2016 where they lost to KR. John Johnson (basketball, Born 1956)
Jonathan M. Johnson (born 12 July 1955) is an American former basketball player and coach. He was part of the first influx of foreign basketball players in Iceland in the late 1970s. In 1979, he set the single game scoring record in the Icelandic top-tier Úrvalsdeild karla when he scored 71 points for Fram against ÍS. In 1980, he won the Icelandic championship and the Icelandic cup as an assistant coach with Valur. Early life Johnson was born and grew up in Los Angeles.
