Köktöbe (hill)
Köktöbe (; ) or Koktyube () is a hill in Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city and former capital. At 1,100 meters (3,610 feet) above sea level, it is one of the main landmarks of the city and a symbol of Almaty. Atop the hill is the Kök Töbe Recreation Area, featuring amusement park attractions, restaurants, and viewing platforms. The hill is accessible by road or the Köktöbe cable car, with the City Terminal located near Hotel Kazakhstan. The Almaty Tower, standing 372 meters tall, is located at the base of the hill and is visible from most parts of the city. History Up until the 1960s, the Köktöbe hill was known as Verigina (). Prior to the Soviet era, the hill was a favorite gathering spot for city residents. From there, In the summer, they organized May Day celebrations, and in the winter, the hill was popular for skiing and sledding. Kök Töbe (recreation Area)
The Kök Töbe or Kök-Töbe (; ), sometimes spelled as Kok-Tyube () is a recreation area in Almaty, Kazakhstan, featuring amusement park attractions and restaurants. It is located on top of Köktöbe (hill), Köktöbe hill and connected to downtown Almaty by a cable car line, with the City Terminal near Hotel Kazakhstan. An iconic 372-meter-tall Almaty Tower stands at the foot of the hill, visible from most parts of the city. History The Kök Töbe recreation area was opened in 2006 on top of the Köktöbe (hill), Köktöbe hill, and The Beatles monument was constructed in 2007. In September 2014, the recreation area was closed for the construction of a new cable car, as well as the reconstruction of the northern side of the mountain and the recreation area. In March 2016, the Kök Töbe completed its renovation of the cable car and the recreation area. Transport in the area currently comprises 17 cable cars.
