Köktöbe (hill)
Köktöbe (; ) or Koktyube () is a hill in Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city and former capital. At 1,100 meters (3,610 feet) above sea level, it is one of the main landmarks of the city and a symbol of Almaty. Atop the hill is the Kök Töbe Recreation Area, featuring amusement park attractions, restaurants, and viewing platforms. The hill is accessible by road or the Köktöbe cable car, with the City Terminal located near Hotel Kazakhstan. The Almaty Tower, standing 372 meters tall, is located at the base of the hill and is visible from most parts of the city. History Up until the 1960s, the Köktöbe hill was known as Verigina (). Prior to the Soviet era, the hill was a favorite gathering spot for city residents. Kök Töbe (recreation Area)
The Kök Töbe or Kök-Töbe (; ), sometimes spelled as Kok-Tyube () is a recreation area in Almaty, Kazakhstan, featuring amusement park attractions and restaurants. It is located on top of Köktöbe (hill), Köktöbe hill and connected to downtown Almaty by a cable car line, with the City Terminal near Hotel Kazakhstan. An iconic 372-meter-tall Almaty Tower stands at the foot of the hill, visible from most parts of the city. History The Kök Töbe recreation area was opened in 2006 on top of the Köktöbe (hill), Köktöbe hill, and The Beatles monument was constructed in 2007. In September 2014, the recreation area was closed for the construction of a new cable car, as well as the reconstruction of the northern side of the mountain and the recreation area. Hotel Kazakhstan (, ) is the third-tallest building in the city of Almaty, Kazakhstan. It is 102 m (335 ft) tall, with 26 floors. It is situated in the southern center of Almaty. Almaty Tower
The Almaty Television Tower (; ), or simply Almaty Tower, formally the Koktobe TV Tower (; ) is a steel television tower built between 1975 and 1983 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The tower is located on high slopes of Kok Tobe mountain ( means "green hill") south-east of downtown Almaty. Unlike other similar TV towers, it is not a concrete, but a steel tubular structure. It is the tallest free-standing tubular steel structure in the world. The tower is 371.5 m (1,219 ft) tall; its 114 m metal aerial reaches 1000 meters above sea level. It has two observation decks at the height of 146 m and 252 m, which are accessible by two high-speed elevators. It is however not open to the public. Zamanbek Nurkadilov
Zamanbek Qalabayuly Nurkadilov (, ''Zamanbek Qalabaiūly Nūrqadılov''; 15 January 1944 – 11 November 2005) was a Kazakh politician who served as the head of Almaty in Kazakhstan and Minister of Emergency Situations in the Nazarbayev administration. In March 2004, he began to criticize President Nursultan Nazarbayev. On 11 November 2005, three weeks before the 2005 presidential election, someone shot him twice in the chest and once in the head.
