The KwaZulu Marlins are a South African basketball team based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Established in 1994, the Marlins play in the Basketball National League The Basketball National League (BNL) is the pre-eminent male professional basketball league in South Africa. The league was founded in 2013, however, before the Premier Basketball League had been running as the country's premier basketball leagu ... (BNL). The Marlins won the Premier Basketball League in 1997 and the BNL in 2024, and were runners-up in 2007. The team is coached by Graig Gilchrist since 2013. KwaZulu-Natal
KwaZulu-Natal (, also referred to as KZN) is a Provinces of South Africa, province of South Africa that was created in 1994 when the government merged the Zulu people, Zulu bantustan of KwaZulu ("Place of the Zulu" in Zulu language, Zulu) and Natal Province. It is located in the southeast of the country, with a long shoreline on the Indian Ocean. It shares borders with three other provinces and the countries of Mozambique, Eswatini and Lesotho. The Basketball National League (BNL) is the pre-eminent male professional basketball league in South Africa. The league was founded in 2013, however, before the Premier Basketball League had been running as the country's premier basketball league. The league also has a female counterpart, the Women's Basketball National League, which was established in 2021. Egoli Magic are the most successful club in league history, having won five championships. History PBL era Founded in 1994 as the Premier Basketball League (PBL), the league was founded by six franchises. In an agreement with the national federation Basketball South Africa, the league began with four new teams, namely Capetown Eagles, Soweto Panthers, Capetown Kings and Pretoria Suns. 2024 BNL Season
The 2024 BNL season was the 11th season of the Basketball National League (BNL), the top-flight basketball league in South Africa. The season began on June 22, 2024, and ended with the last game of the finals series on October 20, 2024. The Cape Town Tigers were the defending champions, but were unable to defend their title as they withdrew from the league. The KwaZulu Marlins won their second championship, its first in 27 years, as they had won their first title in the Premier League of 1997. Team changes The league existed out of 11 teams. The BNL decided to enforce a promotion and relegation system and as such the last-ranked Eastern Cape Windbreakers were not part of the league this season, and MBB from Johannesburg joined the league. Samkelo Cele
Samkelo Brian Cele (born 28 December 1997) is a South African professional basketball player who plays for Petro de Luanda (basketball), Petro de Luanda of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). Born in Durban, he played college basketball for three different universities. Cele began playing professionally in 2023 and was an All-BAL First Team selection in 2024, and is a two-time BAL All-Defensive Team selection, all while playing for the Tigers. Early life Born in Durban, Cele received a basketball scholarship for Durban High School, one of the best schools in the city. After graduating in 2016, he moved to the United States to play for Bull City Prep in Charlotte, North Carolina. Cele also attended a basketball camp in Serbia in 2015. Thabo Sithole
Thubelihle Thabo Sithole (born 10 June 1995) is a South African basketball player for Cape Town Tigers and the South Africa national basketball team. Early life Born in KwaZulu-Natal, Sithole attended Durban High School and started playing basketball seriously at age 8. Professional career In December 2015, Sithole signed with BC Žalgiris, Žalgiris, as a result of head coach Darius Dimavičius's visit to South Africa. Sithole started his professional career in Lithuania with BC Žalgiris-2, Žalgiris-2 in the second-tier National Basketball League (Lithuania), National Basketball League (NKL). In 2018, he signed in South Africa with the KwaZulu Marlins of the Basketball National League (BNL).
