Srirampore subdivision is an administrative subdivision of the Hooghly district in the state of West Bengal, India. Overview Srirampore subdivision is the most urbanised, and the one with the highest density of population, of all the subdivisions of Hooghly district. Urbanisation started with industrialisation of the Hooghly Flats, the narrow strip of land along the Hooghly and spread inland covering a large portion of Hooghly-Damodar Plain, the agriculturally rich alluvial plains lying between the Hooghly and the Damodar. The entire area is a part of the Gangetic Delta. The Hooghly is a tidal river and has a high west bank. Furfura Sharif
Furfura Sharif (also known as Phurphura, Furfura Darbar Sharif) is a village in Jangipara community development block of Srirampore subdivision in Hooghly District in the state of West Bengal, India. It is a holy place for some Bengali Muslims. Before the afternoon prayers, people queue up at the ''mazar'' (shrine) of Mohammad Abu Bakr Siddique (1846-1939), a prominent ''pir'' (holy person) of the town. People say it is the second most prominent ''mazar'' in the country after Ajmer Sharif Dargah in Rajasthan. History The masjid built by Muqlish Khan in 1375 is a site for Muslim pilgrimage, especially during the pir's '' mela'' (fair). It attracts a large number of pilgrims during Urs festival. Oral tradition holds that the Bagdi (Barga Kshatriya) king who ruled here was defeated by Shah Kabir Halibi and Karamuddin, both of whom were killed in the battle. Antpur
Antpur is a village in the Jangipara community development block of the Srirampore subdivision in the Hooghly District in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is around 20 km from Tarakeswar. Haripal is nearest railway station from Antpur. History The most famous temple in Antpur is that of Radhagovindjiu with exquisite terracotta carvings depicting stories from all the 18 puranas. This 100 feet high temple was constructed by Krishna Ram Mitra, the Diwan of Bardhaman Raj in 1786 (1708 Shakabda). Its ''Chandi Mandap'' and ''Dol Mancha'' have beautifully crafted wood carvings and terracotta. The period when the temple was built was curious. Muslim rule was ebbing out and the Europeans were making forays into the country. It is said that Krishna Ram Mitra built the temple to enthuse the Hindus.
