Korea–Khitan War
''Korea–Khitan War'' () is a 2023–2024 South Korean television series based on the 2018 South Korean novel ''Goryeo–Khitan War: Sweet Rain in the Winter'' by Gil Seung-soo. Produced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of KBS, the series stars Kim Dong-jun, Choi Soo-jong, and Ji Seung-hyun. It aired on KBS2 from November 11, 2023 to March 10, 2024, every Saturday and Sunday at 21:25 ( KST). It is also available for streaming on Wavve in South Korea, on Kocowa in the Americas, and on Netflix in selected regions in Asia. Synopsis The series tells the story of King Hyeonjong of Goryeo (Kim Dong-jun) uniting Goryeo under his tolerant leadership by leading the war against the Khitans to victory, together with Gang Gam-chan ( Choi Soo-jong), the King's political mentor and the commander-in-chief of the Goryeo army. Chŏng Sŏng
Chŏng Sŏng (; ) was a Goryeo military commander during the Second Goryeo-Khitan War. Biography In 1010, Chŏng Sŏng was the garrison commander () of Hŭnghwajin () and the director of the Ministry of Revenue (), when the Khitan Emperor Shengzong invaded Goryeo with his army of 400,000 men and laid siege to the fortress of Hŭnghwajin. Alongside Sŏbungmyŏn military inspector Yang Kyu and Yi Suhwa (), Chŏng defended the fort from the Khitan besiegers. Failing to take Hŭnghwajin, the Khitan army lifted the siege and continued going south. On March 6, 1011, Chŏng Sŏng attacked the retreating Khitans from the rear when they were halfway through the Yalu River, with many of the retreating soldiers drowning in the river. Lee Jee-hoon (; born March 27, 1979) is a South Korean singer and actor. Career Lee made his debut on October 15, 1996, while he was still in high school, with the single "Why the Heaven". He had not been able to release a solo album since his 4 album released in February 2001. Instead of performing on stage as a solo singer, he and Kangta formed a project group called the " S" with their close singer friend, Shin Hye-sung. Kang Cho
Kang Cho (, 964 – January 1, 1011) was a Goryeo official, who served under King Mokjong of Goryeo and King Hyeonjong of Goryeo. He was the military inspector of Seobukmyeon, the northwest frontier territory on Goryeo's border with the Liao dynasty. He seized power and overthrew Mokjong and installed Hyeonjong as king in his place. When the Liao invaded Goryeo, he was defeated in battle, captured, and then killed. Yang Gyu
Yang Kyu (; ? – March 5, 1011) was a Korean military official who served the Goryeo dynasty. He fought in the second conflict in the Goryeo–Khitan War. Biography During the reign of King Mokjong, Yang Kyu served as the director of the Ministry of Justice (). In 1010, during the Liao invasion, Yang was appointed as military inspector () of Sŏbukmyŏn. He defeated the Liao army at Hŭnghwa-jin, resisting calls to surrender, and prevented the fortress' fall. The Liao army lifted the siege and left Hŭnghwa-jin. The Liao defeated Kang Cho's 300, 000 man army at T'ongju (modern day Sonchon County). The Khitans sent No Chŏn (), a captured Goryeo official, with forged edict from Kang Cho asking Yang to surrender the fortress. Yang refused as he would only take orders from the king, not Kang. Gang Gam-chan
Kang Kam-ch'an (; 22 December 948 – 9 September 1031) was a medieval Korean government official and military commander during the early days of the Goryeo period (918–1392). Even though he was a career scholar and government official, he is best known for his military victories during the Third Goryeo-Khitan War. Kang came from the Geumju Kang clan. Early life Kang was born on 22 December 948 into a prominent aristocratic family in the hyeon of Geumju (now Gwanak District, Seoul). His father also worked for the King Taejo of Goryeo, and had been awarded for helping establish a new dynasty and unifying the Korean Peninsula. A legend tells that on the day he was born a meteor fell toward his house, and an advisor to the king visited to find that a baby had just been born there, whom he predicted would become great and be long remembered.
