The standard KLAT test assesses the abilities of the test-taker for daily life and work, for professional and educational settings in Korea. There is also a Basic-KLAT, or B-KLAT, that "assesses whether or not examinees have basic communication ability." As of February 2021, there are 36 testing venues in 11 countries. Korean is the first language, native language for about 81 million people, mostly of Koreans, Korean descent. It is the national language of both South Korea and North Korea. In the south, the language is known as () and in the north, it is known as (). Since the turn of the 21st century, aspects of Korean Wave, Korean popular culture have spread around the world through globalization and Korean Wave, cultural exports. Beyond Korea, the language is recognized as a minority language in parts of China, namely Jilin, and specifically Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, Yanbian Prefecture, and Changbai Korean Autonomous County, Changbai County. It is also spoken by Sakhalin Koreans in parts of Sakhalin, the Russian island just north of Japan, and by the in parts of Central Asia. Korean Language Society
The Korean Language Society () is a society of hangul and Korean language research, founded in 1908 by Ju Sigyeong. It promotes hangul exclusive writing. Hangul Day was founded in 1926 during the Japanese occupation of Korea by members of the Korean Language Society, whose goal was to preserve the Korean language during a time of rapid Japanization. The society established a Korean orthography () in 1933. Many of its early members were imprisoned and tortured in 1942 when Korea was under Japanese imperial rule. Test Of Proficiency In Korean
The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK; ) is a test to measure the Korean language proficiency of non-native speakers in South Korea. This examination system was introduced by the South Korean government in 1997 and conducted by a branch of the Ministry of Education of the country. The test is offered six times annually (Jan, Apr, May, Jul, Oct, Nov) within South Korea and less often to people studying Korean in other countries. The test is for individuals whose first language is not Korean and is taken by overseas ethnic Koreans, those wishing to study at a Korean university, and for those who want to be employed at Korean companies in and outside of Korea. Since 2011, TOPIK is administered by the (국립국제교육원, NIIED), a branch of the Ministry of Education in South Korea. History The test was first administered in 1997 and taken by 2,274 people.
