Kocho (Iraq)
Kocho (; ) is a village in Sinjar District, south of the Sinjar Mountains in the Nineveh Governorate of Iraq. It is considered one of the disputed territories of Northern Iraq and is populated by Yazidis. The village came to international attention in 2014 due to the Genocide of Yazidis by ISIL, genocide of Yazidis committed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, Islamic State. Genocide in Kocho Background Iraqi forces withdrew from Sinjar region including the village of Kocho after the Fall of Mosul in early June 2014, prompting the lightly-equipped and outgunned Peshmerga to enter Sinjar city to prevent ISIS from capturing the city. Peshmerga began constructing a barrier south of the city to prevent ISIS incursions. Nineveh Governorate
Nineveh Governorate (; , ) is a governorate in northern Iraq. It has an area of and an estimated population of 2,453,000 people as of 2003. Its largest city and provincial capital is Mosul, which lies across the Tigris river from the ruins of ancient Nineveh. Before 1976, it was called ''Mosul Province'' and included the present-day Dohuk Governorate. The second largest city is Tal Afar, which has an almost exclusively Turkmen population. An ethnically, religiously and culturally diverse region, it was partly conquered by ISIS in 2014. Iraqi government forces retook the city of Mosul in 2017. People's Protection Units
The People's Defense Units (YPG), also called People's Protection Units, is a libertarian socialist US-backed Kurds in Syria, Kurdish militant group in Syria and the primary component of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The YPG mostly consists of Kurds, but also includes Arabs and YPG International, foreign volunteers; it is closely allied to the Syriac Military Council, an Assyrian people, Assyrian militia. The YPG was formed in 2011. It expanded rapidly in the Syrian Civil War and came to predominate over other armed Syrian Kurdish groups. A sister militia, the Women's Protection Units (YPJ), fights alongside them. Lamiya Haji Bashar
Lamiya Haji Bashar (Arabic: لمياء Øجي بشار) is a Yazidi human rights activist. She was awarded the Sakharov Prize jointly with Nadia Murad in 2016. Biography Haji Bashar is from Kocho, near Sinjar, Iraq. In August 2014, along with Nadia Murad, she was abducted by Islamic State from the village and forced into sexual slavery. She was also forced to make suicide vests. Aided by her family who paid local smugglers, she escaped in April 2016, being injured by a land mine in the process. She received medical treatment in Germany. In October 2016, she and Murad were jointly awarded the Sakharov Prize; the ceremony took place in December 2016. Nadia Murad
Nadia Murad Basee Taha (; ; born 10 March 1993) is an Iraqi-born Yazidi human rights activist based in Germany. In 2014, during the Yazidi genocide by the Islamic State, she was abducted from her hometown of Kocho in Iraq. Much of her community was massacred. After losing most of her family, Murad was held as an Islamic State sex slave for three months, alongside thousands of other Yazidi women and girls. Murad is the founder of Nadia's Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to "helping women and children victimized by genocide, mass atrocities, and human trafficking to heal and rebuild their lives and communities". Its establishment was prompted by the Sinjar massacre. In 2018, she and Congolese gynecologist Denis Mukwege were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for "their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict." Qiniyeh (Iraq)
Qiniyeh () is a village in the Sinjar District, south of the Sinjar Mountains in the Nineveh Governorate in Iraq. It is populated by Yazidis and gained international fame in 2014 through the genocide of the Islamic State on the Yazidis. History On 3 August 2014, about 90 Yazidis (including 12-year-old boys) were shot dead by ISIS terrorists in Qiniyeh amid the wider Sinjar massacre of Yazidis by ISIS terrorists. The Yazidis killed in Qiniyeh were traveling in a group of at least 300 other Yazidis who wanted to flee to the mountains in front of the IS terrorists. The Sinjar massacre () marked the beginning of the genocide of Yazidis by ISIL, the killing and abduction of thousands of Yazidis, Yazidi men, women and children. It took place in August 2014 in Sinjar city and Sinjar District in Iraq's Nineveh Governorate and was perpetrated by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Êzîdxan Protection Force
The Êzîdxan Protection Force (HPÊ) (, ), is a Yazidi military force founded by Haydar Shesho in the summer of 2014 in response to the Sinjar massacre. It was bigger than the other main Yazidi militia who took part in the liberation of Sinjar from the Islamic State, the Sinjar Resistance Units, which is aligned with the PKK-backed Kurdistan Communities Union. The militia was known as the Protection Force of Sinjar or HPŞ (), also translated as Sinjar Defense Units or Sinjar Protection Force, until November 2015, when it changed its name to ''Hêza Parastina Êzîdxanê'' or HPÊ. The Iraqi Armed Forces are the military forces of the Iraq, Republic of Iraq.
