Knighton, Stafford
Knighton is a hamlet in the parish of Adbaston in the county of Staffordshire, England. Knighton is situated north of Newport, Shropshire, close to the Staffordshire/Shropshire border in undulating agricultural land featuring many endemic hardwood trees. Another feature is the Shropshire Union Canal, which passes through the hamlet at the point of a cutting and substantial embankment. Adjacent to the canal is the Knighton Reservoir, the function of which is to replenish its waters. Although a fundamentally agricultural community there is a food processing and packaging plant belonging to the food manufacturer Knighton Foods Ltd which processes and packs a wide range of products including Hot Beverages, Instant Desserts, Custards and Whips, Bakery Ingredients, Instant Milks, Coffee Creamers and Fat Powders. Woodseaves is a village in Staffordshire, England. It lies in the civil parish of High Offley and is situated on the A519 ( Newport-Newcastle-under-Lyme) road and lies at the south-west end of the B5405 road, which leads to Great Bridgeford. Nearby are the villages of Gnosall and Norbury, the hamlets of Knightley and High Offley, and the small town of Eccleshall. The elevation of the village is between and above sea level. Longford Hall, Shropshire
Longford Hall is a large country house in Longford, a village in Shropshire, England near the town of Newport. Building history Longford Hall was built in 1275 by Adam de Brompton and owned by the Earl of Shrewsbury. In April 1644 it was captured by Royalists and subsequently demolished. The present house was built on the site 1794-97 by Colonel Ralph Leeke and designed by Joseph Bonomi. Leeke was a political agent of the British East India Company, the architect had worked with Robert and James Adam. The hall is Grade II* listed with English Heritage. The hall is placed on top of a low rise and looks over farmland towards the Lilleshall Monument which is surrounded by burials. As with many such buildings, the first 100 feet in front of the hall are manicured grass, bordered by a ha-ha which prevented animals from entering. William Adams (haberdasher)
William Adams (c. 15851661) was a 17th-century London haberdasher born in Newport, Shropshire who, in 1656, founded Adams' Grammar School, now called Haberdashers' Adams School. Since his death in 1661, the school has been governed by the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers. In addition to the school, William Adams founded William Adams’ Eleemosynary Charity which built the almshouse cottages on the high street in Newport, on either side of the original school gates and on property surrounded by the school. Tables representing the Will of William Adams hang in the 'Big School' building of Haberdashers' Adams Grammar School, and the copying of these texts (known as Bill's Will) was a common punishment for minor misdemeanours up until the end of the twentieth century.
