Kirmeeravadham
Kirmeeravadham (The Slaying of Kirmeera) is a Kathakali play (Aattakatha (performance), Aattakatha) written by Kottayam Thampuran (also known as Kottayathu Thampuran) in Malayalam. Based on the Mahabharatha, the story concerns itself with events in the course of the forest exile of the Pandava princes. The play has fourteen scenes. The four plays of Kottayam Thampuran, namely, Kirmeeravadham, Bakavadham, Kalyanasaugandhikam, and Kalakeyavadham, are considered very important in the Kathakali repertoire and are a combination of conventional structure (''chitta'') with intermittent possibilities for improvisation (''manodharma''). Aattakatha (performance)
Aattakatha is a literary genre in Malayalam language consisting of the libretto used for the Indian classical dance drama '' kathakali''. The word ''aatta-katha'' literally means "story for dancing and acting" (''atu'' "to sway" + ''kathā'' "story"). The narrative framework of ''aattakatha'' consists quatrains in Sanskrit metres where the diction also is heavily Sanskritised; the dialogue part, however, is made up of ''padas'', which can be set to ''raga'' (tune) and ''tala'' (rhythm) and have to be rendered by means of gestures and body movements by the actors while being sung by musicians from behind. The origins of ''aattakatha'' literature dates back to the 12th century and it emerged as a literary genre in the 17th century. Hidimba
Hidimba (, ) was a powerful demon king who is mentioned in the epic Mahābhārata. He was killed by Bhima and this is recounted in the 9th sub-parva (Hidimba-vadha Parva) of the Adi Parva. Death The demon Hidimba lived in a forest along with his sister Hidimbi. While travelling, the Pandavas stopped in that forest to rest while Bhima stood on guard. Hidimba ate human flesh and became eager to devour them. He sent Hidimbi to kill the Pandavas and to bring them back to him. Hidimbi went on his instructions, but her mind changed on seeing Bhima. She assumed the form of a beautiful woman and told about her brother to Bhima. She proposed him to become her husband. Hidimba got furious at his sister and rushed towards her to kill her. Bakasura
Bakasura (, ), also rendered Baka, is a rakshasa featured in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. The rakshasa lives in a forest which nowadays known as "Gangani" located near Garhbeta town of the Indian state of West Bengal. In exchange for protecting the kingdom from invaders, he terrorises its citizens, eating them at will. The weak king is rendered helpless. The people come to an arrangement with their tormentor: They would send him large provisions of food every week, which he would consume, along with the cart-driver who delivered them. Kirmira
Kirmira (, ) is a Rakshasa featured in the Mahabharata. He is the younger brother of the Bakāsura and a friend of Hiḍimbā. He lived in the Kāmyaka Forest and hunted men at night for his food. He opposed the Pandavas entering the forest and threatened to eat Bhima, by whom he was slain in combat.
