Khamis, Bahrain
Khamis () is a village located between Salmaniya and Isa town in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It is largely a residential area with a number of shops and business establishments. It is also the site of the '' Khamis Mosque'', which is the first Islamic mosque in Bahrain. It used to be host to a weekly souq every Thursday. Isa Town
Isa Town (, ''Madīnat ʿĪsā'') is a middle class town located in Bahrain, in the north central part of the country. Etymology The name ''Isa'' refers to Isa ibn Salman Al Khalifah, a former ruler of Bahrain, from 1961 to 1999. History Isa Town largely comprises affluent newly constructed villas, and is home to many members of Bahrain's educated middle class. In 2002's election it was one of the few areas of Bahrain not to be entirely represented by an Islamist or right-wing MP, with Abdnabi Salman of the formerly communist Democratic Bloc winning the seat. Khamis Mosque
The Khamis Mosque (; transliterated: ''Masǧid al-ḫamīs'') is believed to be the first mosque in Bahrain, built during the era of the Umayyad caliph Umar II. According to '' Al Wasat'' journalist Kassim Hussain, other sources mention that it was built in a later era during the rule of Uyunids with one minaret. The second was built two centuries later during the rule of Usfurids. The identical twin minarets of this ancient Islamic monument make it easily noticeable as one drives along the ''Shaikh Salman Road'' in Khamis. History It is considered to be one of the oldest mosques in the region, as its foundation is believed to have been laid as early as 692 CE. An inscription found on the site, however, suggests a foundation date of sometime during the 11th century.
