Keurboomstrand, Western Cape
Keurboomstrand is a resort town near Plettenberg Bay on the Western Cape of South Africa. It takes its name from the indigenous keurboom tree which grows in the region. The Keurbooms River runs nearby. History The Matjes River Rock Shelter nearby contains artefacts from the San dating back to the Neolithic period 11,000 years ago and is a National Monument. The shell middens at the site is one of the largest in the world being 10 metres high, 15 metres wide and 30 metres long, but have been degraded. Portuguese explorers from the ''Sao Gonçalo'' were ship-wrecked nearby in 1630 for eight months which was the first European settlement in South Africa. Middens
A midden is an old dump for domestic waste. It may consist of animal bones, human excrement, botanical material, mollusc shells, potsherds, lithics (especially debitage), and other artifacts and ecofacts associated with past human occupation. These features provide a useful resource for archaeologists who wish to study the diets and habits of past societies. Middens with damp, anaerobic conditions can even preserve organic remains in deposits as the debris of daily life are tossed on the pile. Each individual toss will contribute a different mix of materials depending upon the activity associated with that particular toss. During the course of deposition sedimentary material is deposited as well. The Neolithic or New Stone Age (from Ancient Greek, Greek 'new' and 'stone') is an archaeological period, the final division of the Stone Age in Mesopotamia, Asia, Europe and Africa (c. 10,000 BCE to c. 2,000 BCE). San People
The San peoples (also Saan), or Bushmen, are the members of any of the indigenous hunter-gatherer cultures of southern Africa, and the oldest surviving cultures of the region. They are thought to have diverged from other humans 100,000 to 200,000 years ago. Their recent ancestral territories span Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and South Africa. Keurbooms River
The Keurbooms River () is a river in the Western Cape Province in South Africa. The river has its sources south of Uniondale, Western Cape, Uniondale in the Langkloof and flows in a roughly southeastern direction. It passes De Vlugt and the Prince Alfred Pass, flowing along the northern side of the R340 road then it turns south. After crossing the N2 road (South Africa), N2 road, it flows into the Indian Ocean through the Keurbooms Estuary, located close to the coastal town of Plettenberg Bay. The Keurbooms River is approximately 85 km long with a catchment area of 1,080 km2. Its main tributary is the Bitou River, Bitou (Bietou). Virgilia (plant)
''Virgilia'' is a genus of Southern African trees in the family Fabaceae that is known for its very fast growth (4.5 m in 2 years) and a tendency to fall over as it matures (15 years or so). The common name in South Africa (in Afrikaans) is , meaning 'choice tree'. Valued as useful ornamental trees by gardeners, the genus's two species are also known as tree-in-a-hurry, Cape lilac, blossom tree and pink blossom tree. Taxonomy The genus was described by Jean Louis Marie Poiret and published in Encyclopédie Méthodique in 1808. Most botanists feel that the two species are simply forms and should be lumped under one species, ''Virgilia oroboides''. Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay, nicknamed Plett, is the primary town of the Bitou Local Municipality in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. According to the census of 2001, the town had a population of 29,149. It was originally named Bahia Formosa ("Beautiful Bay") by early Portugal, Portuguese explorers and lies on South Africa's Garden Route 210 km from Port Elizabeth and about 600 km from Cape Town.
