Keshan, Iraq
Keshan (Kurdish: Keşan) is a small village located in Batifa District of Duhok Governorate, within the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It lies near the mountainous border area between Iraq and Turkey. The village was among several affected by Turkey's 2020 “Claw‑Tiger” military operation, which led to the evacuation of residents due to cross-border bombardments. Geography Keshan is situated at the coordinates: 37.239596°N, 43.022193°E. The area is mountainous and forested, surrounded by other small villages in Batifa District. Events Due to ongoing military operations by Turkey targeting PKK positions in the border regions of Duhok Governorate, Keshan village has experienced airstrikes and security concerns. Duhok Governorate
Duhok Governorate (, , ) is a governorate in the autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Its capital is the city of Duhok. It includes Zakho, near the Ibrahim Khalil border crossing with Şırnak Province, Turkey. It borders the Al-Hasakah Governorate of Syria. It was established on 27 May 1969, previously part of Nineveh Governorate. The population of the governorate was estimated to be 1,772,367 in 2023. Kurdistan Region (KRI) is a semi-autonomous Federal regions of Iraq, federal region of the Iraq, Republic of Iraq. Duhok
Duhok (; ; , ) is a city in Kurdistan Region, Iraq. It is the capital city of Duhok Governorate. Name The city of Duhok received its name from the Kurdish words ’du’ (two) and ’hok’ (lump) as a tax payment of two lumps from the basket of each passing caravan that often carry wheat and barley. According to a tradition presented by Sasson Nahum, Dohuk was initially named ''Dohuk-e Dasinya'', signifying "Dohuk of the Yezidis". However, after a massacre of the Yezidis, the town was abandoned, leading to the settlement of Muslims, Christians, and Jews in the area.
