Gozo Football League Second Division
The Gozo Football League Second Division, known as Bank of Valletta, BOV GFL Second Division for sponsorship reasons, is the second and lowest level in the Gozo Football League. The league was first competed in 1948. The Second Division is played in the same manner as the Gozo Football League First Division, First Division: based on three rounds, each club plays three games against every other team for a total of 15 games. The season is usually held between September and April, and at the end of the season, the champion is automatically promoted to next season's First Division season and replaces the bottom-placed club from the First Division. The second-placed club plays a promotion and relegation play-off against the seventh-placed team in the First Division, with the winner earning the right to play in the top tier the following season. Kerċem Ajax Stadium
The Kerċem Ajax Stadium () is a stadium located in Kerċem, Gozo, Malta. The stadium is believed to seat around 1,000 people and hosts the Gozo Football League Second Division and domestic cup matches. Background and description The stadium was inaugurated on 3 October 2014 and was part of an estimated €6 million investment made by the Malta Football Association with the help of the Government in completing ten infrastructural projects in Malta. The stadium comprises one stand, which is accessible from Wenzu Mintoff Street. The stand seats around 1,000 people and is host to a number of facilities, including dressing rooms, a clinic and a rehabilitation pool and a VIP room. The Raymond Mercieca Sports Complex The stadium makes part of the Raymond Mercieca Sports Complex, which was upgraded back in 2007 at a cost of Lm17,000. Santa Luċija, Gozo
Santa Luċija is a hamlet in Kerċem, in Gozo Island, Malta. The hamlet takes its name from the church situated in the middle of the hamlet. The original chapel dedicated to St Lucy was recorded by inquisitor Pietro Dusina in 1575 during his apostolic visitation. Santa Luċija is inhabited by country folk with a few old houses built around the church. The local feast in honour of Saint Lucy is celebrated every year on the Sunday closest to the 13th of December, the liturgical feats day of the saint. It has also become a tradition to celebrate the feast day by the Lucia procession or Festival of Light, typical to Scandinavian countries, particularly Sweden. Lucia buns are also made on this day. Fontana, Gozo
Fontana (), as a local council, is an administrative unit of Malta, on the island of Gozo, with a population of 985 people (as of March 2014). History Fontana originated from the suburb of Victoria on the Rabat-Xlendi road. It took its local name, "It-Triq tal-Għajn" (lit. the way to the spring), from a spring at the bottom of the road leading to Xlendi, known locally as "l-Għajn il-Kbira", (the big spring). Fontana is the Italian word for a spring. On the lower part of Fontana, on the right-hand side of the road to Xlendi, one cannot help but notice the evergreen Lunzjata Valley going up to the village of Ta' Kerċem. Victoria (, meaning "the city Victoria"), also known among the native Maltese as Rabat (which is the name of the old town centre) or by its title Città Victoria, is an Local councils of Malta, administrative unit of Malta, and the main town on Gozo. Għarb () is an administrative unit of Malta, located at the westernmost point of the island of Gozo, with a population of 1,549 people (as of 2021). Etymology The name ''Għarb'' (غرب) comes from the Arabic word for "West," referring to the village being at the westernmost point on Gozo and all of the Maltese archipelago. History Għarb started as a small hamlet which developed around the Middle Ages. One can see its ancient roots in the centre of the village where some houses have fine examples of decorated stone balconies. Għarb was created as a parish in 1679, a move which gave impetus for the building of a new, baroque parish church. Built between 1699 and 1729, it has a façade which has been compared to Francesco Borromini's Church of Saint Agnes in Piazza Navona, Rome. Gozo (region)
Gozo Region () is one of six regions of Malta. The region includes the islands of Gozo, Comino and several little islets such as Cominotto. The region does not border any other regions, but it is close to the Northern Region. It was created by the Local Councils Act of 1993. It is the only original region still in existence, since the other two ( Malta Majjistral and Malta Xlokk) were split into smaller regions by Act No. XVI of 2009.
