Kennedy Bridge, Bundaberg
Kennedy Bridge is a heritage-listed road bridge on Bourbong Street crossing Bundaberg Creek from Bundaberg Central to Bundaberg East in Bundaberg, Bundaberg Region, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Alfred Barton Brady and built in 1899. It is also known as Saltwater Creek Road Bridge. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The Kennedy Bridge is a single span metal truss road bridge crossing Bundaberg Creek (also called Saltwater Creek), a tributary of the Burnett River, at Bundaberg. It was constructed in 1899 and was the smaller of two technically and visually related bridges designed by A.B. Brady for Bundaberg. The Burnett area was first settled by Europeans in the 1840s and 50s as a series of pastoral runs. Bundaberg Central is the central suburb and central business district of Bundaberg in the Bundaberg Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Bundaberg Central had a population of 316 people. Geography The suburb is bounded by the Burnett River to the north, Bundaberg Creek to the east, Saltwater Creek to the south and the North Coast railway line to the west. History In 1869, a cemetery was established a block bounded by Woongarra, Maryborough, Woondooma and McLean Streets (). The Victoria Bridge is a vehicular and pedestrian bridge over the Brisbane River. The current bridge, opened in 1969, is the third permanent crossing erected at this location. Woongarra Divisional Board
The Shire of Woongarra was a local government area located to the south and east of the regional city of Bundaberg. The shire, administered from Bundaberg itself, covered an area of , and existed as a local government entity from 1885 until 1994, when it amalgamated with Gooburrum to form the Shire of Burnett. History The Barolin Division was established on 11 November 1879 under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879''. On 30 October 1885, part of Barolin Division was separated to create Woongarra Division to serve the region south of the Burnett River. With the passage of the ''Local Authorities Act 1902'', Woongarra Division became the Shire of Woongarra on 31 March 1903, while Barolin Division became the Shire of Barolin.
