Mau District
Mau district is one of the districts of Uttar Pradesh state of India, and Mau town is the district headquarters which is also one of the few remaining areas of handloom saree production in eastern Uttar Pradesh, specializing in Sadiya silk sarees. Mau was carved out as a separate district from Azamgarh on 19 November 1988. It is situated in the south-eastern part of the state with headquarters in Maunath Bhanjan. The district is surrounded by Ghazipur district on the south, Ballia district in the east, Azamgarh district in the west, and by Gorakhpur and Deoria districts on the north. Mir Shamsi
Mir Shamsi was a mystic and a saint who lived in the Indian village of Karhan, Uttar Pradesh. He was born Syed Shamsuddin, and was the ''mooris-e-aala'' of Saadat Karhan district Mau, Uttar Pradesh, Mau. (The ''mooris-e-aala'' is the patriarch of the family.) He died in the year 1651 AD. Not many records exist of his life, but this information can be read off his tombstone at his ''mazaar'' that is frequented by the locals and other who come to pay homage and ask for wishes to be granted. In his lifetime, he had a reputation for helping people. He was born into a wealthy family, and helped the people of Karhan by getting a lake dug. This provided the villagers with much needed employment and water. Recently a local politician whose wish of winning an election was fulfilled, built a structure to cover his originally unpretentious grave. Ali Jawad Zaidi
Syed Ali Jawad Zaidi (10 March 1916 – 6 December 2004) was an Indian Urdu poet, scholar, and author of over 80 books in several languages. He was also an Indian independence activist, lawyer and later, a civil servant, but is best known for his work in Urdu literature. He was an authority on marsiyago poetry of Uttar Pradesh, including the poets Mir Anis and Mirza Ghalib, and wrote on both poetry and prose, including research and analytical works. He has received several awards for his contributions to literature and other fields. Shamim Karhani
Shamim Karhani (8 June 1913 - 19 March 1975) was an eminent Urdu poet ( 'Shayar') of the 20th century. Early life, education and employment Shamim Karhani ( ur, ) was born in a 'Zamindar' family to Syed Muhammad Akhtar and Ummat ul Zehra on 8 June 1913 in village 'Karhan' district Mau, UP in India. His real name was 'Syed Shamsuddin Haider'. He himself chose 'Shamim Karhani' as his pen name ( 'Takhallus'). Later, this pen name of his became so famous that once, at an interview, when he was asked his name, he himself had to pause for a moment to remember his real name!
