At the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland in 1948, the last military patrol competition was held as a demonstration sport. This was in part due to the aftermath of World War II, which decimated Europe. This sport would be superseded by the biathlon competition which debuted at the 1960 Winter Olympics. The cross-country ski run was not prepared and was made by the leading Swiss team. The Czechoslovak participant Karel Dvořák described the weather of the day as extremely mild with temperatures of about at the starting point at the upper cableway station () on top of the Corviglia in the morning. The participants wore military equipment, of baggage on the back and a military rifle. Only the officers, the patrol leaders, had pistols and did not compete in shooting. The 1948 Winter Olympics, officially known as the V Olympic Winter Games (; ; ; ) and commonly known as St. Moritz 1948 (; ), were a winter multi-sport event held from 30 January to 8 February 1948 in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The Games were the first to be celebrated after World War II; it had been twelve years since the last Winter Games in 1936. From the selection of a host city in a neutral country to the exclusion of Japan and Germany, the political atmosphere of the post-war world was inescapable during the 1948 Games. The organizing committee faced several challenges due to the lack of financial and human resources consumed by the war. Donald H. Weihs (September 7, 1922 – January 3, 2016) was an American military officer and Olympic biathlete. Biography Weihs was born in Sherman, Texas, the son of Howard F. Weihs and his wife Marie Louise, née Gamblin. His brother Bill served in the army as well. Donald was recruited to the 38th Regimental Combat Team. Jaroslav Šír (born 8 November 1923) is a former Czechoslovak soldier and skier. He is from Liberec. Biography Šír was born in Poniklá on 8 November 1923. He started skiing in the age of 15, and was in the national ski team from 1948 to 1955. As a conscript he served at the army sports club in Prague (Armádní tělocvičný klub). In the rank of a Vojín he was a member of the national Olympic military patrol team at the 1948 Winter Olympics which placed sixth. Gilbert Morand
Gilbert Morand (11 July 1923 – 9 August 2008) was a French non-commissioned officer and skier. Sports Morand was born in the Jura department. In the military rank of a Caporal-chef he was a member of the national Olympic military patrol team in 1948 which placed fifth. He also gained eight French military champion titles, including three individual titles. Military service During World War II he joined the Maquis de l'Ain et du Haut-Jura. In 1944 he joined the army, where he served at the 24ème Bataillon de chasseurs (ranger battalion) during the campaign against the Germans, and participated in the occupation of Austria.
