Karate At The 2020 Summer Olympics – Women's 61 Kg
The women's kumite 61 kg competition in Karate at the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 6 August 2021 at the Nippon Budokan. Competition format The competition began with a two-pool round-robin stage followed by a single elimination stage. Each pool consisted of five athletes, with those positioned 1st and 4th seeded to Pool A, and those positioned 2nd and 3rd to Pool B. The athlete that finished first in Pool A faced the athlete that finished second in Pool B in the semifinals, and vice versa. There were no bronze medal matches in the kumite events. Nippon Budokan
The , often shortened to simply Budokan, is an indoor arena in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. It was originally built for the inaugural Olympic judo competition in the 1964 Summer Olympics. The Budokan was a popular venue for Japanese professional wrestling for a time, and it has hosted numerous other sporting events, such as the 1967 Women's Volleyball World Championship. Jovana Preković ( sr-Cyrl, Јована Прековић; born 20 January 1996) is a Serbian former karateka competing in kumite -61 kg division. She is a two-time world champion in the women's kumite 61 kg event (2018 and 2021) and the 2020 Olympic champion, in karate's lone appearance as a Summer Olympic sport. Career She entered the Paris Open of the Karate1 Premier League in January 2017, winning a gold medal in the -61 kg category after beating Merve Çoban of Turkey. By doing so, Preković became the first Serbian to win a gold medal at the event. The World Karate Federation (WKF) is an international governing body of sport karate with 198 member countries. It is the only karate organization recognised by the International Olympic Committee and has more than a hundred million members.
