The manga and anime series ''Zatch Bell!'', known in Japan as for the manga and for the anime, features an extensive cast of characters created and illustrated by Makoto Raiku. The fictional storyline takes place largely in Japan during the early 21st century and focuses on the wikt:eponymous, eponymous character Kiyo Takamine and Zatch Bell, Zatch Bell; a being called Mamodo with supernatural powers fighting in a millennial, royal tournament; alongside an intelligent teen boy named Kiyo Takamine. The series' plot follows Zatch and Kiyo's adventure together as they fight their way through the tournament until only Zatch emerges on top and leaves Earth for his homeworld, the Mamodo world. During the tournament, Zatch also interacts and befriends a few other Mamodo, who are convinced that he is the best hope for becoming a "kind king", his long-held goal. ''Zatch Bell!'', known in Japan as , is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Makoto Raiku. It was serialized in Shogakukan's Shōnen manga, manga magazine ''Weekly Shōnen Sunday'' between January 2001 and December 2007, with its chapters collected in thirty-three volumes. The series follows the title character Zatch Bell, a mystical being called a Mamodo, who is partnered with a 14-year-old schoolboy Kiyo Takamine for a once-a-millennium tournament on Earth that determines the right to rule the Mamodo world as king. During their adventure, Zatch and Kiyo encounter and battle various Mamodo and their human partners, and meet allies who aid Zatch in his quest to become a kind king. ''Zatch Bell!'' was later adapted into an anime television series produced by Toei Animation. Formally titled , the story focuses on the title character Zatch Bell, who is one of a hundred Mamodo participating in an elimination tournament on Earth for the crown of the Mamodo world. The series chronicles Zatch's strengthening bond with his human partner, Kiyo Takamine, and his struggles through the tournament, culminating with his eventual win and subsequent departure from Earth. The series ran for 323 chapters in Shogakukan's ''shōnen'' manga magazine ''Weekly Shōnen Sunday'' from January 10, 2001, to December 26, 2007. The chapters were collected in thirty-three ''tankōbon'' volumes released from May 8, 2001, to June 18, 2008. Zatch Bell! Characters
Kiyo Takamine, known in the original version as and his ''Mamodo'' (known in Japanese as a ) partner Zatch Bell!, known in the original version as , are fictional characters in the anime and manga franchise ''Zatch Bell!'' by Makoto Raiku. Mamodos are beings from another world with supernatural powers. The series begins when Kiyo, by the request of his father, is told to take care of Zatch. Eventually, they become involved in a tournament between Mamodos where the winner becomes king of the Mamodo World. Kiyo and Zatch were based on the design of a normal high school student and a noble knight who combats evil. The knight however was changed into a cuter character. In the Zatch Bell! character popularity polls, Kiyo and Zatch are voted one of the most popular characters ranking in the top three. Plush dolls based on Zatch's appearance have also been made.
