Kamenec (Rokycany District)
Kamenec is a municipality and village in Rokycany District in the Plzeň Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 80 inhabitants. Etymology The village was named after the product that was mined here (''kamenec'' = 'alum'). Geography Kamenec is located about north of Rokycany and northeast of Plzeň. It lies in the Plasy Uplands. The highest point is a nameless hill at above sea level. The stream Radnický potok flows through the municipality. History Kamenec was founded in 1780 by Kašpar Ledebour, when the area was part of his Liblín estate. Alum slate mines were established here, from which alum was extracted. From 1840, sodium silicate was produced here. From 1850 to 1950, Kamenec was part of Němčovice. From 1950 to 1980, it was an independent municipality. Kamyenyets or Kamenets, also known as Kamyanyets, is a town in Brest Region, Belarus. It serves as the administrative center of Kamyenyets District. The town is located in the northwestern corner of Brest Region on the Lyasnaya River, about north from Brest. The Leśna Prawa river flows through the town. In 2002, its population was approximately 9,000. As of 2025, it has a population of 8,133. History It was first mentioned in the ''Galician–Volhynian Chronicle'' in 1276, when a castle with a keep, the tower of Kamyenyets, was being constructed on this spot, to protect the northern boundary of Volhynia from the raids of invaders. Ivan Kamenec (born 27 August 1938) is a Slovak historian. Life Kamenec was born into a Jewish family in Nitra on 27 August 1938 and grew up in . His father, a civil engineer, managed to secure an economic exception to the 1942 deportations, during which most Slovak Jews were sent to the extermination camps. Kamenec avoided the resumption in anti-Jewish persecution during and after the Slovak National Uprising by hiding with his family in a bunker from September 1944 to April 1945, when Slovakia was liberated by the Red Army. He attended secondary school in Topoľčany. He graduated from Faculty of Philosophy of Comenius University in Bratislava in 1961. Then he worked at the State Slovak Central Archive in Bratislava and the Slovak National Museum in Bratislava. At present, he works at the Institute of History of Slovak Academy of Sciences.
