Kalix
Kalix (; Kalix dialect: ''Kôlis'' , phonemically ; ; ) is a locality and the seat of the Kalix Municipality in Norrbotten County, Sweden. The name Kalix is believed to originate from the Sami word ''Gáláseatnu'', or "Kalasätno", meaning "The cold river" the ancient name of the Kalix River. It had 7,299 inhabitants in 2005, out of 17,300 inhabitants in the municipality of Kalix. Kalix Löjrom There is a culinary speciality specific to Kalix, called Kalix Löjrom, also referred to as caviar of Kalix. It is basically fish eggs (caviar) of the vendace, but because of the large influx of fresh water from the huge rivers around and in Kalix, this has transformed the taste of the fish eggs, rendering them unique in flavour to this area alone. Kalix Municipality
Kalix Municipality (, ) is a municipality in Norrbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Kalix. In 1924 Töre Municipality was detached from Nederkalix Municipality, forming a municipality of its own. In 1967 the two units were reunified, and the present municipality was created. History In historical times, Kalix was the name of the court district (Swedish: ''domsaga'') Kalix Lower Court District. It covered two parishes: Nederkalix and Överkalix (literally ''Lower Kalix'' and ''Upper Kalix'', respectively). The chalice on the coat of arms was present in the Nederkalix coat of arms in 1800, and was incorporated into that of Kalix Municipality in 1989. The choice of symbol originates from the similarity between the Latin root of chalice, ''calix'', mug (itself borrowed from Greek kalyx, κάλυξ, shell, husk) and the local Sami pronunciation of ''Gáláseatnu'', an ancient name for the Kalix River. Kalix Church
Kalix Church (, sometimes Nederkalix kyrka) is a medieval Lutheran church in Kalix in Norrbotten County, Sweden. It belongs to the Diocese of Luleå. The church is the northernmost medieval church of Sweden. History The presently visible church was preceded by a wooden chapel. The exact time of construction of the church is not known, but it was probably constructed during the late 15th century. The church is mentioned for the first time in 1472 when archbishop Jakob Ulvsson from Uppsala visited the church in connection with the inauguration of the altarpiece of the church. The event is mentioned in a letter of indulgence, which is also the oldest written record from Kalix as well as the only letter of indulgence that is known to have been issued from the Diocese of Luleå. Kalix Dialect
Nederkalix dialect (sometimes plainly ''Kalix dialect''; endonym: ''kölismåle'' ) is a traditional Norrland dialect of Swedish, spoken in the historical parishes (Swedish: '' socknar'') of Nederkalix and Töre in modern-day Kalix Municipality in Norrbotten in Sweden. The traditional Nederkalix dialect, like the other Norrland dialects, is very divergent from Standard Swedish, containing both archaisms and innovations in the phonological and grammatical systems. The Nederkalix dialect retains Old Norse diphthongs, Old Swedish light syllables, and many initial consonants lost in Standard Swedish. In terms of morphology, the dialect has also preserved plural agreement of verbs, as well as the dative case, which have been lost in Standard Swedish. Kalix Archipelago
The Kalix archipelago () is a group of 792 Swedish islands in the north part of the Bay of Bothnia. The largest island in the Kalix archipelago is Rånön. A few of the islands have small permanent populations, but most are used only for recreation in the summer months. They are icebound during the winter. Location The north of the bay of Bothnia contains a large archipelago area. The islands in the Swedish sector make up the Norrbotten archipelago. Bergön
Bergön is an island in the northwest of the Swedish sector of the Bay of Bothnia, in the Kalix archipelago. The north end of the island has facilities for recreational boating. The southern part, which is used for forestry, has been proposed as the site for a wind farm. Location Bergön is southwest of the city of Kalix in Norrbotten County. It lies to the northwest of the island of Rånön. The island is owned by a forestry company, which has large scale forestry operations. The north and south of the island are designated municipal conservation areas, while there are no special conservation rules for the central area. Norrbotten County
Norrbotten County (, Meänkieli/, ) is the northernmost county or '' län'' of Sweden. It is also the largest county by land area, almost a quarter of Sweden's total area. It shares borders with Västerbotten County to the southwest, the Gulf of Bothnia to the southeast, the counties of Nordland and Troms in Norway to the northwest, and Lapland Province in Finland to the northeast. Kalix Löjrom
Kalix Löjrom is the designation of the roe of the small salmonid fish species vendace (''Coregonus albula''), harvested specifically from the Bothnian Bay archipelago of the Baltic Sea in northern Sweden. Since 2010 it has a status of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) issued by the European Union, and is one of few Swedish products with the PDO status. Kalix is a locality in Norrbotten County. The roe harvest normally starts late September and continues until the vendace are ready for spawning around late October. For various reasons the roe has a more orange or red color than most vendace roe and the grains have a mild taste.
