KTYD (99.9 FM, pronounced "K-Tide") is a commercial radio station that is licensed to Santa Barbara, California, and serves Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. The station is owned by Rincon Broadcasting and airs a classic rock format. KTYD is the flagship station of the nationally syndicated program '' Dennis Mitchell's Breakfast with the Beatles''. History The station first signed on August 11, 1962, as KGUD-FM. It was owned by Metropolitan Theatres Corporation, which also owned the Arlington Theatre in downtown Santa Barbara, and simulcast the country and western music format of its AM sister station KGUD. In November 1967, radio and television personality Dick Clark purchased KGUD-AM-FM from Metropolitan Theatres for $195,000. He sold the combo in September 1971 to a group led by Harold S. KTMS
KTMS (990 AM, "Fox Sports 990/97.9") is a commercial radio station in Santa Barbara, California. It is owned by Rincon Broadcasting and airs a sports radio format. The studios are on East Cota Street in Santa Barbara. By day, KTMS is powered at 5,000 watts. But to protect other stations on 990 AM, a clear channel frequency, KTMS reduces power at night to 500 watts. The AM transmitter site overlooks Santa Barbara from near Rattlesnake Canyon Park, along Gibraltar Road, and above Gibraltar Peak, home of most Santa Barbara FM stations. The site is unusual, since AM stations are usually sited in low-lying areas, ideally with the highest possible high ground conductivity. This site is sufficiently close to the population center for even the low night power to serve the whole city. KSBL (101.7 MHz, "K-Lite 101.7") is a commercial FM radio station licensed to Carpinteria, California, and serves the Santa Barbara and Oxnard—Ventura, California radio markets. The station is owned by Rincon Broadcasting and broadcasts an adult contemporary radio format, switching to Christmas music for part of November and December. KOSJ (1490 AM) is a commercial radio station that is licensed to Santa Barbara, California and serves the Santa Barbara area. The station is owned by Rincon Broadcasting and broadcasts a rhythmic oldies music format branded "Old School 94.1 and 1490 AM". KOSJ is rebroadcast on FM translator K231CR in Santa Barbara on 94.1 MHz. History Early years The station launched on the 720 kHz frequency as KFCR in April 1926; it moved to 1420 kHz the following year. KFCR was purchased in 1929 by George Barnes, owner of KGB in San Diego. Barnes changed the call letters to KDB in tribute to his wife, Dorothy Barnes, and moved the station to 1500 kHz. In October of that year, KDB's license was canceled for failure to comply with regulations from the Federal Radio Commission (forerunner to the Federal Communications Commission or FCC).
