Hero of Ukraine (HOU; uk, Герой України, ''Heroi Ukrainy'') is the highest national title that can be conferred upon an individual citizen by the President of Ukraine. The title was created in 1998 by President Leonid Kuchma and as of 11 December 2022 the total number of awards is 687; some decrees on the assignment of the title Hero of Ukraine were not published. Semyon Kuzmich Tsvigun ( ukr, Семен Кузьмич Цвігун; russian: Семён Кузьмич Цвигун; 28 September 1917 – 19 January 1982) was an officer of the Soviet security police (KGB) whose sudden and unexplained death heralded a major shift in Kremlin power politics. Career Semyon Tsvigun was born into a large family of Ukrainian peasants, in Stratievka village, in the Chechelnik district of Odessa province, located near the Vinnitsa region of Ukraine. After graduating, he worked as a history teacher in the region of west Ukraine then designated as the Moldavian Autonomous Region. In November 1939, he was recruited to the NKVD. This was at a time when Joseph Stalin and the new chief of police, Lavrentiy Beria were preparing to seize the former Russian-ruled province of Bessarabia from Romania, to create the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, now (Moldova). Yuriy Volodymyrovych Cheban ( uk, Юрій Володимирович Чебан; born 5 July 1986 in Odessa, Ukraine) is a retired Ukrainian sprint canoeist. He is the 2012 and 2016 Olympic champion in C-1 200 metres. Career In 2003, despite being a year younger than many of his rivals, he was a world junior silver medallist at Komatsu, Japan in the Canadian canoe C-1 1000 m and also finished fourth in the C-1 500 m event. Having won the 2004 European Junior Championships at both the C-1 500 m and C-1 1000 m in Poznań, Poland, Cheban was selected to represent Ukraine in both C-1 events at the 2004 Summer Olympics.
