Minnie Joycelyn Elders (born Minnie Lee Jones; August 13, 1933) is an American pediatrician and public health administrator who served as Surgeon General of the United States from 1993 to 1994. A vice admiral in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, she was the second woman, second person of color, and first African American to serve as Surgeon General. Elders is best known for her frank discussion of her views on controversial issues such as drug legalization, masturbation, and distributing contraception in schools. She was forced to resign in December 1994 amidst controversy as a result of her views. She is currently a professor emerita of pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Joycelyn Harrison (born January 22, 1964) is an African-American engineer who is Associate Dean of the College of Aeronautics and Engineering at Kent State University. In 2006 she was awarded the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal. Her research considers the development of novel piezoelectric materials. Early life and education Harrison was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Her first job was washing people's hair in her mother's beauty salon. She attended North Chattanooga Junior High School where her teacher, Stu Silvernman, encouraged her to pursue a career in chemical engineering. Joycelyn Wilson is an assistant professor of hip hop studies and digital humanities in the Black Media Studies cohort, located in the school of literature, media, and communication in the Ivan Allen College at the Georgia Institute of Technology. As an educational anthropologist, Wilson is an expert in African-American music and performance - with particular interests in contemporary modes of cultural production in the American South and Hip Hop in general, as well as their broad impact on higher education.
