José Jeronimo Zelaya was a conservative Honduran politician that was president of Honduras that was elected in 1827 by popular vote. However, his administration was only recognized by the department of Santa Barbara. He was only in office for a period of three months. Departments Of Honduras
Honduras is divided into 18 departments ( Spanish: ''departamentos''). Each department is headed by a governor, who is appointed by the President of Honduras. The governor represents the executive branch in the region in addition to acting as intermediary between municipalities and various national authorities; resolves issues arising between municipalities; oversees the penitentiaries and prisons in his department; and regularly works with the various Secretaries of State that form the President's Cabinet. To be eligible for appointment as governor, the individual must a) live for five consecutive years in the department; b) be Honduran; c) be older than 18 years of age and; d) know how to read and write. This article lists the presidents of Honduras, since the country declared its independence from Spain on 15 September 1821. Heads of state of Honduras within the Federal Republic of Central America (1821–1839) On 1 July 1823 Honduras, along with Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, declared its independence from the First Mexican Empire to form the short lived Federal Republic of Central America, also known as United Provinces of Central America. Honduras remained as a member state until it decided to separate in 1838. The entire union dissolved in civil war between 5 November 1838, when Nicaragua separated from the federation, and about 1840.
