Joshua Van Sant
Joshua Van Sant (December 31, 1803 – April 8, 1884) was a United States Congressional representative from Maryland. He served as mayor of Baltimore from 1871 to 1875. Background Van Sant was born in Millington in Kent County, Maryland. He moved with his parents to Wilmington, Delaware, in 1807, and later to Philadelphia in 1812. He attended the common schools before moving to Baltimore, Maryland. Career He engaged in hat making in 1817, became a journeyman, and continued that trade until 1835. He was an unsuccessful candidate as a Jackson Democrat (supporting seventh President Andrew Jackson) to the lower chamber Maryland House of Delegates of the General Assembly of Maryland in 1833 and 1834, but served as a delegate to the State constitutional convention (version unratified) in 1836. Ferdinand Claiborne Latrobe
Ferdinand Claiborne Latrobe (October 14, 1833 – January 13, 1911) was a seven-term Mayor of Baltimore, member of the Maryland House of Delegates and attorney during the 19th century. Early life Latrobe was born on October 14, 1833, at a house on South Gay Street in Baltimore. He was the son of patent lawyer and Latrobe stove ("Baltimore Heater") inventor John H. B. Latrobe and Virginia Charlotte Claiborne, and the grandson of the American architect and engineer Benjamin Henry Latrobe. In his mother's line, he was the grandson of General Ferdinand Leigh Claiborne and the great-nephew of William C. C. Claiborne, Governor of Mississippi, the Louisiana Territory, and the State of Louisiana. He was named after his grandfather, Ferdinand Claiborne. Latrobe was educated at the College of St. James in Washington County, Maryland. James Morrison Harris (November 20, 1817 – July 16, 1898) was a United States House of Representatives, Representative from the United States House of Representatives, Maryland District 3, third district of Maryland. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Harris was educated at private institutions in the city. He then entered Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania in 1833 where he studied law. Harris was admitted to the bar in 1843 and commenced practice in Baltimore. Edward Hammond (politician)
Edward Hammond (March 17, 1812 – October 19, 1882) was a US Democratic Party (United States), Democratic politician. Hammond was born at "Font Hill" near Ellicott City, Maryland. He attended the common schools, Rockhill Academy, and later graduated from Yale College in 1830. He studied law in New Haven, Connecticut and in Baltimore, Maryland, was admitted to the bar in 1833, and commenced practice in Annapolis, Maryland. He served in the Maryland House of Delegates from Anne Arundel County in 1839, 1841, and 1842, and also served as a member of the Maryland Senate in 1848. In 1848, Hammond was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first and Thirty-second Congresses, serving from March 4, 1849, to March 3, 1853. Greenmount Cemetery
Green Mount Cemetery is a historic rural cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Established on March 15, 1838, and dedicated on July 13, 1839, it is noted for the large number of historical figures interred in its grounds as well as many prominent Baltimore-area families. It retained the name Green Mount when the land was purchased from the heirs of Baltimore merchant Robert Oliver. Green Mount is a treasury of precious works of art, including striking works by major sculptors including William H. Rinehart and Hans Schuler. The cemetery was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Guided tours are available at various times of the year.
