John Watt (politician)
John Brown Watt (16 May 1826 – 28 September 1897) was a Scottish-born Australian businessman, banker, and politician. Watt was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council in Sydney and a board member of the Imperial Federation League in London. Outside of state politics, he was a director of the Union Bank of Australia (now the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited) and the CSR Limited, Colonial Sugar Refining Company. He was also a director of the Sydney Hospital, Sydney Infirmary and Dispensary and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, as well as the founder of the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, Hospital for Sick Children, Glebe. Early life Watt was born in Edinburgh, Mid-Lothian, Scotland, the eldest son of Royal Navy officer Alexander Hamilton Watt and his wife Margaret (née Gilchrist). John Watt (born c.1932) is an Australian physicist, former Assistant Chief of the CSIRO Division of Mineral and Process Engineering, and Australia Prize winner. Watt was educated at the University of Sydney where he obtained a Master of Science degree in 1956. From around 1956 to 1967 he was a Research Officer with the Australian Atomic Energy Commission. John Watt (broadcaster)
John Watt (27 October 1901 – 23 February 1960) was a British broadcaster and producer. Watt was born on 27 October 1901 at 4 Hidbrooke Park Road, Blackheath, London, to Richard Watt, a solicitor, and Minnie (née Dale). He went to Cranleigh School and University College London. Among the shows he worked on as the BBC's Director of Variety were '' Workers' Playtime'' and '' ITMA''. He appeared as a castaway on the BBC Radio programme ''Desert Island Discs'' on 3 December 1956. Watt died on 23 February 1960 at home in Montpelier Street, Brighton. John Millar Watt (14 October 1895 – 13 December 1975) was a British painter, illustrator and comics artist who created the comic strip ''Pop''. Early life Born in Greenock on the River Clyde, Scotland, the son of James H. Watt, an engineer, and his wife Henrietta. He was raised in Ilford in East London and studied metalwork at the Sir John Cass Institute before studying anatomy under Henry Stabler. He was apprenticed to an advertising agency whilst attending evening classes at the Westminster School of Art. His apprenticeship was interrupted in 1915 by World War I during which Watt served with the Artists' Rifles and the Essex Regiment. After being discharged, he studied briefly at Slade School of Art before returning to advertising work. He supplemented his wages with cartoons for the ''Daily Chronicle'' and illustrations for ''The Sphere''. Prof John Mitchell Watt FRSE FRSSA FRCPE FLS LLD (1 December 1892–23 April 1980) was a 20th-century South African physician and pharmacologist. He served in both World Wars. He made extensive catalogues of traditional African medicines. Life He was born in Port Elizabeth in Cape Colony on 1 December 1892. He was educated at the Grey Institute High School in Port Elizabeth. His family moved to Scotland and he completed his education at Stirling High School. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh graduating with an MB ChB in 1916. He then joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. In 1921 he became Professor of Pharmacology at University College, Johannesburg In 1933 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
