John Martin (New Zealand Admiral)
Rear Admiral Alan John Ogilvie Martin, is a retired officer of the Royal New Zealand Navy, who served as Chief of the Navy from 30 November 2015 to 29 November 2018. Born in Dunedin, Martin joined the navy in 1979. He served as commander of the Royal New Zealand Navy Fleet as the Maritime Component Commander from March 2011 to September 2013. The Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN; mi, Te Taua Moana o Aotearoa, , Sea Warriors of New Zealand) is the maritime arm of the New Zealand Defence Force. The fleet currently consists of nine ships. Rear Admiral
Rear admiral is a senior naval flag officer rank, equivalent to a major general and air vice marshal and above that of a commodore and captain, but below that of a vice admiral. It is regarded as a two star "admiral" rank. It is often regarded as a two-star rank with a NATO code of OF-7. The term originated in the days of naval sailing squadrons and can trace its origins to the Royal Navy. Each naval squadron was assigned an admiral as its head, who commanded from the centre vessel and directed the squadron's activities. The admiral would in turn be assisted by a vice admiral, who commanded the lead ships that bore the brunt of a battle. In the rear of the squadron, a third admiral commanded the remaining ships and, as this section was considered to be in the least danger, the admiral in command of it was typically the most junior. Chief of Navy (CN) commands the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) and is responsible to the Chief of Defence Force (CDF) for raising, training and sustaining those forces necessary to meet agreed government outputs. The CN acts as principal advisor to the CDF on Navy matters, and is the most senior appointment in the RNZN. The rank associated with the position is rear admiral, and CNs are generally appointed on a three-year term. The position was originally created as Chief of Naval Staff and First Naval Member upon the formation of the RNZN on 1 October 1941. A number of the officers who became CNS served as Commodore, Auckland (later named Maritime Component Commander) before taking the helm of the Navy. Rear Admiral Jack Raymond Steer, is a retired Royal New Zealand Navy officer, who served as Chief of Navy from 2012 to 2015. Career Born in Christchurch, Steer joined the Navy in 1973. He served as Chief of Staff at Joint Forces Headquarters from January 2003 to April 2004, when he was promoted to commodore and appointed as Maritime Component Commander.
