Johan Furstner
Johannes Theodorus Furstner (18 January 1887, Amsterdam – 15 September 1970, The Hague) was a Dutch naval officer and politician. Reaching the rank of lieutenant admiral ( nl, luitenant-admiraal), he served as Minister of the Navy (Netherlands), Minister of the Navy during World War II in the Second Gerbrandy cabinet. Furstner was a naval theorist and a central figure in the Royal Netherlands Navy from the late 1930s through the end of World War II in 1945. He was educated at the ''Hogere Krijgsschool'' ( en, Higher Military School) and the French ''École supérieure de guerre'' ( en, Superior School of warfare). Although he was a co-founder of the Alliance for National Reconstruction ( nl, Verbond voor Nationaal Herstel), he had little interest in the pre-World War II Dutch political party system. Lieutenant Admiral
Lieutenant admiral () is a senior naval military rank in the Royal Netherlands Navy. The rank is a four-star rank, senior to a vice-admiral () and equivalent to admiral in most foreign navies. It is used whenever the Dutch Chief of Defence is from the Navy. The Dutch navy rank of "admiral" is traditionally reserved for a member of the House of Orange-Nassau. The rank was also used in the Kingdom of England during the sixteenth century for the office of the Lieutenant of the Admiralty.
