Jerry Mills
Jerry A. Mills (February 26, 1951 - January 28, 1993) was an openly gay cartoonist known for his comic strip ''Poppers'', which is credited as one of the first comic strips to develop multi-dimensional gay characters. Scholars have stated that while earlier comics had relied on stereotypes such as the nelly queen or muscleman, Mills presented his characters with lives beyond the stereotypes. His work is also credited as having helped shape comics for the LGBTQ+ community and its members. Career Mills created ad hoc cartoons and wrote an eight-page history of gays in comics for the first '' Meatmen'' anthology. In the earlier part of the 1980s, Mills worked in the subscriptions department of ''In Touch for Men'', an adult magazine company aimed at gay men. John Calendo, the magazine's editor and friend of Mills, promoted the artist to a regular comic strip. Queer Nation is an LGBTQ activist organization founded in March 1990 in New York City, by HIV/AIDS Activism, activists from AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, ACT UP. The four founders were outraged at the escalation of Violence against LGBT people, anti-gay violence on the streets and prejudice in the arts and media. The group is known for its confrontational tactics, its slogans, and the practice of outing. ''Gay'' is a term that primarily refers to a homosexual person or the trait of being homosexual. The term originally meant 'carefree', 'cheerful', or 'bright and showy'. While scant usage referring to male homosexuality dates to the late 19th century, that meaning became increasingly common by the mid-20th century. Allan Charles Neuwirth (born 1956) is an American screenwriter, producer, author, designer, and cartoonist known for his work in film, television, print, and as co-creator of the syndicated comic strip ''Chelsea Boys''. Early life Neuwirth was born in Washington Heights, New York City, and raised in Manhattan, New Jersey, and Brooklyn. His mother, Bella Neuwirth (née Gajzt), born in Lublin but raised from infancy in Antwerp, Belgium, was a Holocaust survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camps. ''Chelsea Boys'' is an American comic strip created by Glen Hanson and Allan Charles Neuwirth, about the lives of three gay male roommates living in New York City's Chelsea district. The strip first began publication in 1998 in New York's ''Next'' magazine. Stylistically, the strip is very much "of its time", reflecting the prevailing fashion for heaviness of line and a tendency to angularity. In terms of content and characterization, the strip bears some similarities to a 1970s and 1980s comic strip called ''Poppers'', which was drawn by Jerry Mills, though both strips differ artistically. Tim Barela (born 1954 in Los Angeles, California) is an acclaimed gay cartoonist who is best known for his creation of the comic strip ''Leonard & Larry''. The ''Leonard & Larry'' strip first appeared in a 1984 issue of ''Gay Comix'', then were later featured in '' The Advocate'' and ''Frontiers'' magazines. The comic series has been collected in four volumes published by Palliard Press, and a single volume by Rattling Good Yarns.
