Jean Bréhal
Jean Bréhal OP was the inquisitor-general of France who led the effort to rehabilitate Joan of Arc. Biography Little is known about the life of Jean Bréhal with the exception of some documents regarding his career within the Dominican Order. It is known that he made his profession of faith among the Dominicans of the city of Évreux and remained faithful to the city's best interests for the rest of his life. He studied philosophy and theology for seven years at the University of Caen, supported financially by the ébroïciens, until 1443, when he was made Doctor of Theology. In 1452, while residing in Paris, he became the Inquisitor-general of France; and two years later, in 1455, was elected prior of the convent of Saint-Jacques of Paris and finally elected to review the trial of Joan of Arc's conviction. The Order of Preachers ( la, Ordo Praedicatorum) abbreviated OP, also known as the Dominicans, is a Catholic mendicant order of Pontifical Right for men founded in Toulouse, France, by the Spanish priest, saint and mystic Dominic of Caleruega. It was approved by Pope Honorius III via the papal bull ''Religiosam vitam'' on 22 December 1216. Members of the order, who are referred to as ''Dominicans'', generally carry the letters ''OP'' after their names, standing for ''Ordinis Praedicatorum'', meaning ''of the Order of Preachers''. Membership in the order includes friars, nuns, active sisters, and lay or secular Dominicans (formerly known as tertiaries).
