Jan Barham
Janette Louise Barham (born 8 October 1958) is an Australian politician who was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council between 2011 and 2017. Early life Barham grew up in Wollongong in the southern suburb of Unanderra and was educated at Figtree High School. She later attended university in Newcastle, but did not graduate. She later went on to study at Wollongong TAFE and then won a statewide scholarship to attend East Sydney Tech, where she earned two trade certificates. Upon completion, she undertook work experience with a fashion company and then was then offered a full‐time job in the fashion industry in Sydney, where she lived for eight years prior to moving to the North Coast in 1989, where she currently resides. Barham quickly became involved in local environmental groups and campaigning in the area. Greens New South Wales
The Greens New South Wales, commonly known as Greens NSW, is a green political party in New South Wales and a member of the Australian Greens. First formed in 1991, the Greens NSW began as a state-level party before joining with other green parties in Australia to create the current federated structure. The Greens NSW continue to be separate to the other state and territory Greens parties in several regards. The Greens NSW tend to be more left-wing in their political positions in comparison to the other state parties, and continues to maintain the original Greens policy of not having a single parliamentary leader, instead being based on principles of collective leadership. New South Wales Legislative Council
The New South Wales Legislative Council, often referred to as the upper house, is one of the two chambers of the parliament of the Australian state of New South Wales. The other is the Legislative Assembly. Both sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. It is normal for legislation to be first deliberated on and passed by the Legislative Assembly before being considered by the Legislative Council, which acts in the main as a house of review. The Legislative Council has 42 members, elected by proportional representation in which the whole state is a single electorate. Dawn Walker
Dawn Elizabeth Walker is a former Australian politician. She was appointed as a Greens member of the New South Wales Legislative Council on 22 February 2017 to fill a casual vacancy resulting from the resignation of Jan Barham, and served until her defeat at the 2019 state election. Early life Walker was born and schooled in Melbourne, graduating from Monash University with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from Griffith University. She worked for 15 years as a policy adviser for Small Business Victoria, a state government agency. Beginning her career at the Commonwealth Employment Service, Dawn was responsible for developing and funding programs to make TAFE more accessible to women. Byron Shire is a local government area located in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia. The shire is located adjacent to the ''Coral Sea'' about south of the Queensland border. 2011 New South Wales State Election
Elections to the 55th Parliament of New South Wales were held on Saturday, 26 March 2011. The 16-year-incumbent Labor Party government led by Premier Kristina Keneally was defeated in a landslide by the Liberal–National Coalition opposition led by Barry O'Farrell. Labor suffered a two-party swing of 16.4 points, the largest against a sitting government at any level in Australia since World War II. From 48 seats at dissolution, Labor was knocked down to 20 seats—the worst defeat of a sitting government in New South Wales history, and one of the worst of a state government in Australia since federation.
