James Marks (architect)
James Marks (1834–1915) was an architect in Queensland, Australia. A number of his buildings are listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. Early life James Marks was born in England in 1834, where he trained as a carpenter, and taught himself building construction, joinery and architectural drawing. Career He emigrated to Queensland in 1866, where he immediately established himself as a builder and architect in Dalby, on the Darling Downs. In 1874 Marks moved to Toowoomba, where he practiced principally as an architect. On his elder son Henry James (Harry) Marks becoming a partner in 1892, the firm of James Marks and Son was established. This firm dominated the architectural profession in Toowoomba and district for more than half a century. James' son, Reginald Marks, also worked in the firm. Later life James Marks died on 29 October 1915 in Toowoomba. He was buried the following day (30 October 1915) in the Presbyterian section of the Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery. Work ... St Matthew's Anglican Church, Drayton
St Matthew's Anglican Church is a heritage-listed church at Beatrice Street, Drayton, once a town but now a suburb of Toowoomba in Toowoomba Region, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by James Marks and built from 1886 to 1887 by Seath, Hobart and Watson. It is also known as St Matthew's Church of England and is the second church of that name in Drayton. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History St Matthew's Church of England is a small bluestone church constructed in 1886-7 to the design of James Marks and is the second church of this name in Drayton. It is complemented by a timber hall built in 1913 and a rectory built in 1902-1903, both of which were moved to this site in 1930. History This single storeyed brick residence was erected in 1899 for Gilbert Gostwyck Cory and his wife Ann Sophy, daughter of pastoralist and politician James Taylor. It is one of a number of substantial residences erected along Russell Street, including Taylor's own residence, Clifford House. Designed by notable/prolific Toowoomba architect James Marks, and built by Alexander Mayes, a prominent Toowoomba builder and three-times Mayor of Toowoomba, it was the second residence to be erected on this site. It was designed by architectural firm James Marks and Son and built from onwards. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History Smithfield House was designed by James Marks & Son in 1895 for James Taylor, a wealthy Darling Downs landowner. The contractor was Sydney (Harry) Andrews. Taylor is considered to have been the driving force behind Toowoomba's development, as he invested heavily in land in Toowoomba particularly during the late 1850s. He took a leading role in encouraging the social, cultural and economic development of Toowoomba, donating land to various groups and churches, and he became known as "the King of Toowoomba".
