Jack Schmitt
Harrison Hagan Schmitt (born July 3, 1935) is an American geologist, retired NASA astronaut, university professor, former U.S. senator from New Mexico, and the most recent living person—and only person without a background in military aviation—to have walked on the Moon. In December 1972, as one of the crew onboard Apollo 17, Schmitt became the first member of NASA Astronaut Group 4, NASA's first scientist-astronaut group to fly in space. As Apollo 17 was the last of the Apollo program, Apollo missions, he also became the List of Apollo astronauts#People who have walked on the Moon, twelfth and second-youngest person to set foot on the Moon and the second-to-last person to step off of the Moon (he boarded the Apollo Lunar Module, Lunar Module shortly before commander Eugene Cernan). Silver City is a town in Grant County, New Mexico, United States. It is the county seat and the home of Western New Mexico University. As of the 2010 census the population was 10,315. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,704. History The valley that is now the site of Silver City once served as an Apache campsite. With the arrival of the Spaniards, the area became known for its copper mining. After the American Civil War, a settlement developed and became known as "La Ciénega de San Vicente" (the Oasis of St. Vincent).
