Jüri Rumm (film)
''Jüri Rumm'' is an Estonian feature-length film made in 1929 based on Hans Varessoo's 1908 novel of the same name. The film was directed by Johannes Loop. Plot The film depicts the legendary adventures of the Estonian itinerant, thief, and robber Rummu Jüri, who became famous among people in Estonia in the 1880s. The story begins with the corporal punishment meted out to the manor's valet Jüri, which the proud and independent young man does not forgive the gentlemen for. The honor of his beloved Madli is also at stake at the manor, and in order to save her Jüri must risk imprisonment. However, as a skilled and daring man, he remains elusive. The story of the young lovers is intertwined with risky swindles at the expense of the gentry. Like an Estonian Robin Hood, Jüri takes revenge for the injustice done to the peasantry. Boris Jaanikosk (born Boris Jankovski, later Boris Borissoff; June 16, 1897 – June 1, 1976) was an Estonian film actor and film director. Life and work Boris Jaanikosk was born Boris Jankovski and later Estonianized his family name to Jaanikosk. In 1929, Jaanikosk played one of the leading roles in the Estonian film production ''Jüri Rumm'', directed by Johannes Loop. The film premiered in December 1929. In 1930, he directed the first musical film in Estonian film history. The short film ''Kuldämblik'' (The Golden Spider), for which he also wrote the screenplay, was also the first Estonian sound film. The black-and-white film is considered lost. In the 1950s, Boris Jaanikosk worked as an editor for the Soviet Estonian newsreel ''Filmikroonika''. Salme Peetson
Salme Peetson (April 29, 1885 – August 31, 1967) was an Estonian actress. Early life and education Salme Peetson was born in Narva, Estonia. She was the daughter of Jaan Peetson (1858–1936) and Louise Marie Peetson (née Holm; 1858–1932), who were workers at the Kreenholm Manufacturing Company. She graduated from the Kreenholm factory school in 1899 and initially worked as a weaver and hatmaker. Career Starting in 1900, she appeared in performances by the theater group of the Estonian temperance society . She was an operetta and stage actress at the Estonian Theater from 1909 to 1937, in 1941, and again from 1943 to 1944, and she also sang in the choir. She appeared in two films in 1929. Rummu Jüri (born Jüri Rummo; in Kehtna Parish – unknown) was an Estonian itinerant, thief and robber. He has become the archetypical Estonian folk hero, an outlaw who stole from the rich to give to the poor. Although most noted for his material egalitarianism, in the stories he also pursues other types of equality and justice. Early life and criminal career Jüri was born in Kehtna Parish as the first child of farm tenant Jaan Rummo and his wife Anne. As a teenager, Jüri was a boarder in Kehtna manor (German: ''Kechtel''), where he studied a little German. He once stole a piece of meat (according to other records, a bottle of wine) from the manor for his sick father, for which the gentleman sentenced him to corporal punishment. Voldemar Päts (born Vladimir Päts; February 15, 1902 – September 1942) was an Estonian cinematographer and actor. Early life and family Voldemar Päts was born Vladimir Päts in Tänassilma, in the Governorate of Livonia of the Russian Empire (now Estonia), the son of the Estonian Orthodox priest (1871–1940) and Ludmilla Päts (née Tšistjakova, 1879–1955). He was the nephew of the Estonian statesman Konstantin Päts (1874–1956), the artist Voldemar Päts (1878–1958), and the geographer (1880–1942). Career In 1931, Päts collaborated with Elmar Jaanimägi to create the first Estonian animated film, ''Kutsu-Juku seiklusi'' (The Adventures of Juku the Dog). During a visit to Estonia by Sweden's Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf in 1932, the head of state Jaan Teemant forbade filming, and Päts was sentenced to two weeks of arrest or a fine of 10 kroons.
