Józef Olejniczak
Józef Olejniczak (5 September 1918 – 13 March 2001) was a motorcycle speedway rider from Poland. He was the 1950 Polish champion. Career Olejniczak became the champion of Poland after he won gold at the Polish Individual Speedway Championship in 1950, during the 1950 Polish speedway season. From 1949 to 1954, he won six consecutive Team Speedway Polish Championships, as part of the Unia Leszno team that dominated the Polish leagues from the 1949 Polish speedway season, through to the 1954 Polish speedway season. The Leszno team included riders such as Alfred Smoczyk, Jan Malinowski and Henryk Żyto. Unia Leszno are a motorcycle speedway team established on 8 May 1938 and based in Leszno, Poland. The team's home track is at the Stadion Alfreda Smoczyka. They compete in the Ekstraliga (speedway), Ekstraliga (the highest division) and are Poland's most accomplished team, winning 18 Team Speedway Polish Championships (as of 2022). The Team Speedway Polish Championship ( Polish: ''Drużynowe Mistrzostwa Polski, DMP'') is an annual speedway event held each year in different Polish clubs organized by the Polish Motor Union (PZM) since 1948. In 2000, the First Division was renamed Ekstraliga, and the number of teams was reduced. The team winning the league is awarded a gold medal and declared Polish Team Champions. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Alfred Smoczyk (11 October 1928 – 26 September 1950) was an international motorcycle speedway rider from Poland. Speedway career Smoczyk was the first champion of Poland, winning the Polish Individual Speedway Championship in 1949. In 1950, he was killed in a motorcycle accident in the Kąkolewski forest, near Gostyń. Later that year on 30 September, the Polish President Bolesław Bierut posthumously awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. Jan Malinowski (24 April 1931 – 1 May 2018) was an international speedway rider from Poland. Speedway career Malinowski finished runner-up in the Polish Individual Speedway Championship in 1959. He was part of the Polish team that reached the final of the 1960 Speedway World Team Cup. Malinowski toured the United Kingdom with the Polish national team during 1960. He died in 2018. Henryk Żyto (1936–2018) was an international motorcycle speedway rider from Poland. He earned 32 international caps for the Poland national speedway team. Speedway career Żyto reached the final of the Speedway World Championship in the 1960 Individual Speedway World Championship. Also in 1960, he rode for Coventry Bees in the British speedway leagues, during the 1960 Speedway National League and won both the Midland Riders' Championship and the Midland Cup. Alfred Smoczyk Stadium () is a stadium in Leszno, Poland. It is currently used for speedway matches and is the home stadium of Unia Leszno. The stadium has a capacity of 16,700 people. He successfully competed on Dutch tracks in the late 1940s, but died in a road accident in October 1950. He was the first Individual Polish Champion after World War II (in 1949).
