Juozas Paliūnas
Juozas Paliūnas, widely known by his codename Rytas (1 May 1915 – 1 October 1952) was an anti-Sovet Lithuanian partisan and the last commander of the Prisikėlimas military district. Biography Early life Juozas Paliūnas was born on 1 May 1915 to farmers Jurgis Paliūnas and Ona Masytė in the village of in the modern-day Raseiniai district, then the Kovno Governorate of the Russian Empire. He was the youngest of nine children. His oldest brother Antanas died, while three others, Mečislovas, Vladas and Kazys were deported to Siberia. Only Kazys survived and returned to Lithuania. Another brother by the name of Jonas was a teacher until his death during the German occupation of Lithuania during World War II. In 1939 Paliūnas married Viktorija Petretytė, with whom he had two children. Partisanship Paliūnas joined the Lithuanian Liberty Army in 1944. Prisikėlimas Military District
The Prisikėlimas military district (Lithuanian: ''Prisikėlimo apygarda''; "Resurrection district") was a military district of Lithuanian partisans which were active from 1947 to 1969, and comprised the counties of Šiauliai, Joniškis, and partially - Kėdainiai, Panevėžys and Raseiniai. It formed out of the Kęstutis military district as managing its wide area presented difficulties. The newly created district prioritized connections with other partisan districts as well as the protection of partisan leadership. Lithuanian Liberty Army
The Lithuanian Liberty Army (sometimes also named as Lithuanian Freedom Army) ( or LLA) was a Lithuanian underground military organization established by (codename Senis), a Vilnius University Law Faculty student, on December 13, 1941. Its goal were to re-establish independent Lithuania via political and military means. It was part of the anti-Nazi resistance during the German occupation of Lithuania during World War II as it opposed German policies, but did not begin armed resistance. The armed struggle began in mid-1944 when Red Army reached the Lithuanian borders after the Minsk offensive. The LLA became the first wave of the Lithuanian partisans, armed anti-Soviet guerrilla fighters. It attempted to become the central command of the armed struggle.
