Judge (band)
Judge is a New York hardcore band formed in 1987 by Youth of Today guitarist John "Porcell" Porcelly and former Youth of Today drummer Mike "Judge" Ferraro. History Their first release was a 7-inch EP on Porcell's label Schism (which he ran along with Side by Side/ Gorilla Biscuits guitar player Alex Brown) entitled '' New York Crew''. The record featured five songs, one of which was a cover of "Warriors" by the British oi!/ punk band Blitz. On this recording, the band was merely a two-piece, featuring Porcelly on bass and guitar, and Ferraro on vocals and drums. But with the addition of bass-player Jimmy Yu (of Mike's former band Death Before Dishonor, which eventually evolved into Supertouch) and drummer "Lukey" Luke Abbey ( Warzone/ Gorilla Biscuits), they got together a fully functional live line-up. Hardcore Punk
Hardcore punk (commonly abbreviated to hardcore or hXc) is a punk rock music genre#subtypes, subgenre and subculture that originated in the late 1970s. It is generally faster, harder, and more aggressive than other forms of punk rock. Its roots can be traced to earlier punk scenes in San Francisco and Punk rock in California, Southern California which arose as a reaction against the still predominant History of the hippie movement, hippie cultural climate of the time. Matt Pincus
Matthew Storrs Pincus is an American music publisher and investor who founded Songs Music Publishing. He is also the current bassist of the band New York City Hardcore Band Judge. Early life and education Pincus is the son of Lionel Pincus, co-founder and chairman of private equity firm Warburg Pincus. His mother, Suzanne Storrs, was Miss Utah in 1955 and a television actress, who was married to Lionel Pincus until her death in 1995. He is a graduate of Columbia University, where he received his B.A. in 1995 and M.B.A. in 2002. He has a brother, Henry Pincus, who is an actor and also attended Columbia. Career At age 17, he joined the New York hardcore band Judge, where he played bass. In college, Pincus interned at various record labels, including EMI and Jive Records. Dirty Rotten Imbeciles
Dirty Rotten Imbeciles (often abbreviated and referred to as D.R.I.) are an American crossover thrash band that formed in Houston, Texas in 1982 and would later relocate to San Francisco, California. The band is currently composed of two of its founding members, lead vocalist Kurt Brecht and guitarist Spike Cassidy, as well as bassist Greg Orr and drummer Rob Rampy. D.R.I. never gained a mainstream audience, but the integration of their hardcore punk roots with thrash metal influences was a stylistic catalyst for their contemporariesmost notably Suicidal Tendencies, Corrosion of Conformity, Stormtroopers of Death, the Cro-Mags, Nuclear Assault, Adrenalin O.D., and Cryptic Slaughteralongside whom they are considered to be one of the major pioneers of what would later be called "crossover thrash". Agnostic Front
Agnostic Front is an American hardcore punk band from New York City. Founded in 1980, the band is considered an important influence on the New York hardcore scene, as well as a pioneer of the crossover thrash genre. History First era (1980–1992) Formed in 1980 with Vincent "Vinnie Stigma" Capuccio (formerly of the Eliminators) on lead guitar, with Diego on bass, Rob Krekus (aka Robby Crypt Crash) on drums and John Watson on vocals. Despite being billed at their first concert as the Zoo Crew, Stigma introduced them as Agnostic Front, saying that the poster had been made prior to deciding on the name. They soon added Ray Barbieri, aka Raybeez, on drums and Adam Mucci on bass. Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a Music genre, genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and United States. Straight Edge
Straight edge (sometimes abbreviated as sXe or signified by XXX or simply X) is a subculture of hardcore punk whose adherents refrain from using alcohol, tobacco, and other recreational drugs in reaction to the punk subculture's excesses. Some adherents refrain from engaging in promiscuous or casual sex, follow a vegetarian or vegan diet and do not consume caffeine or prescription drugs. The term "straight edge" was adopted from the 1981 song " Straight Edge" by the hardcore punk band Minor Threat. The straight-edge subculture emerged amid the early-1980s hardcore punk scene. Since then, a wide variety of various beliefs and ideas have been associated with the movement, including vegetarianism and animal rights. Blitz (British Band)
Blitz were an English punk rock band from New Mills, Derbyshire, formed in 1980 which recorded several singles, EPs and albums. Core history The original Blitz line-up consisted of Carl Fisher (vocals), Charlie Howe (percussion), Nidge Miller (guitar), and Neil "Mackie" McLennan (bass). The band had success in the United Kingdom indie charts in the early 1980s. With both punk and skinhead members, they were enthusiastically championed by ''Sounds'' magazine writer Garry Bushell. They had sent him their demo tape early in 1981. Bushell who labeled them Oi!, was impressed enough to put two of their tracks on that year's ''Carry On Oi'' compilation: "Nation On Fire" and "Youth". He helped them secure a deal with the record label No Future. Punk Rock
Punk rock (also known as simply punk) is a rock music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. New York Crew
New York Crew was a 7-inch EP released by the New York City hardcore band Judge. The record was released on guitarist John Porcelly's record label, Schism Records, in 1988. The record was then later repressed by Revelation Records Revelation Records is an independent record label focusing originally and primarily on hardcore punk. The label is known for releases by bands such as Youth of Today, Warzone, Sick of It All, Quicksand, Side By Side, Chain of Strength, Sh .... At the time of recording and release, Judge was a two-man project, featuring both John "Porcell" Porcelly (at the time of Youth Of Today) and former Death Before Dishonor drummer Mike "Judge" Ferraro. Porcell played the guitar and bass tracks on the record, whilst Mike played drums as well as doing the vocal tracks (not both at the same time). Alex Brown (musician)
Alex Brown (born 1987) is an American pianist and composer known for weaving elements of classical, rhythm and blues, hip-hop, Afro-Caribbean music, and Brazilian jazz. Brown has collaborated with artists that include Valerie Coleman, Sean Jones, Cho-Liang Lin, Yo-Yo Ma, Armando Manzanero, Christian McBride, the New York Voices, David Sanchez, David Shifrin, Chris Thile, Warren Wolf, and Miguel Zenón. He has been a member of Paquito D'Rivera's group since 2007. He has performed at venues including the Lincoln Center Rose Theater, The Blue Note, The Kennedy Center, and The Hollywood Bowl. He won a Grammy Award for Best Classical Compendium as part of his collaboration with composer Jeff Scott and Imani Winds for “Passion For Bach and Coltrane” in 2024.
