Juan José Roman
Juan José Román Mangas (born December 23, 1962) is a Spanish canoe racing, sprint canoer who competed from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s. He won a complete set of medals at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships with a gold (K-2 500 m: 1991 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, 1991), a silver (K-2 1000 m: 1991), and a bronze (K-2 500 m: 1993 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, 1993). Román also competed in four Summer Olympics, earning his best finish of fourth in the Canoeing at the 1992 Summer Olympics – Men's K-2 500 metres, K-2 500 m event at Barcelona in 1992 Summer Olympics, 1992. As of 2009, Román is President of the Royal Spanish Canoe Federation and organizing committee chair of the 2009 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships held in La Seu d'Urgell, Spain. A canoe is a lightweight, narrow watercraft, water vessel, typically pointed at both ends and open on top, propelled by one or more seated or kneeling paddlers facing the direction of travel and using paddles. In British English, the term ''canoe'' can also refer to a kayak, whereas canoes are then called Canadian (canoe), Canadian or open canoes to distinguish them from kayaks. However, for official competition purposes, the American distinction between a kayak and a canoe is almost always adopted. At the Olympics, both conventions are used: under the umbrella terms Canoe Slalom and Canoe Sprint, there are separate events for canoes and kayaks.
