João Moreira Salles
João Moreira Salles (Rio de Janeiro, born 1962) is a Brazilian documentarian and president of the Instituto Moreira Salles. In 2006, he founded the magazine piauí. He has also taught courses on documentary at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and Princeton University. Documentarian
A documentary film or documentary is a non-fictional motion-picture intended to "document reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education or maintaining a historical record". Bill Nichols has characterized the documentary in terms of "a filmmaking practice, a cinematic tradition, and mode of audience reception hat remainsa practice without clear boundaries". Early documentary films, originally called " actuality films", lasted one minute or less. Over time, documentaries have evolved to become longer in length, and to include more categories. Walter Moreira Salles, also Walther Moreira Salles (May 28, 1912 – 2001), was a Brazilian banker, politician and philanthropist, considered as one of the founders of the modern Brazilian banking industry. Career Moreira Salles was born in 1912 in Pouso Alegre, Minas Gerais. He graduated from the Faculty of Law of Largo de São Francisco, University of São Paulo. In 1926 his father, João Moreira Salles, established the Casa Bancária Moreira Salles (Moreira Salles Banking House) in the town of Poços de Caldas, around north-west of Pouso Alegre, and Walter was made an acting partner in 1933 at the age of 21. In 1940, Banco Moreira Salles merged with three regional banks, eventually changing its name to União de Bancos Brasileiros (Unibanco). Moreira Salles implemented a series of successful acquisitions and an emphasis on human resources, helping to make Unibanco one of Brazil's top three banking institutions. Kátia Lund (born March 13, 1966) is a Brazilian film director and screenwriter. Her most notable work was as co-director of the film '' City of God''. Early life Lund was born in São Paulo, to American parents who emigrated to Brazil before she was born. She graduated from Escola Maria Imaculada, an American Catholic school in São Paulo where she excelled in art. She then attended Brown University, where she became interested in filmmaking. ''Santiago'' is a 2007 Brazilian documentary film by João Moreira Salles, about Santiago Badariotti Merlo (1912-1994), a butler who worked for the filmmaker's family for 30 years. In the 2010s it was ranked as number 33 on the Abraccine Top 100 Brazilian films list and also number 3 in the documentary list. Plot In 1992, João Moreira Salles filmed his Argentinean butler Santiago Badariotti Merlo, who was born in 1912 and had worked between 1956 and 1986 for the filmmaker family in the huge house of their own in Rio de Janeiro. Two years later, Santiago died and, for some strange reason, Moreira Salles felt he couldn't edit the film and put it aside. The Havana Film Festival is a Cuban festival that focuses on the promotion of Latin American filmmakers.
