Honduras is divided into 18 departments ( Spanish: ''departamentos''). Each department is headed by a governor, who is appointed by the President of Honduras. The governor represents the executive branch in the region in addition to acting as intermediary between municipalities and various national authorities; resolves issues arising between municipalities; oversees the penitentiaries and prisons in his department; and regularly works with the various Secretaries of State that form the President's Cabinet. Honduras is administratively divided into 18 Departments of Honduras, departments, which are subdivided into 298 municipality, municipalities (). Municipalities are the only administrative division in Honduras that possess local government. Each municipality has its own elected mayor as opposed to the appointed governors of departments. Honduras
Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is a country in Central America. It is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea. Roatán
Roatán () is an island in the Caribbean, about off the northern coast of Honduras. The largest of the Bay Islands Department, Bay Islands of Honduras, it is located between the islands of Utila and Guanaja. It is approximately long, and less than across at its widest point. The island consists of two Municipalities of Honduras, municipalities: José Santos Guardiola, Bay Islands, José Santos Guardiola in the east and Roatán, including the Cayos Cochinos, in the west. José Santos Guardiola Bustillo (1 November 181611 January 1862) was a two-term President of Honduras. He is the only President of Honduras to be assassinated while in office in a crime committed by his personal guard. Early life José Santos Guardiola was born on 1 November 1816 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. His parents were the Catalan miner Esteban Guardiola and Bibiana Bustillo. He married Ana de Arzibu.
