José O. Vera
José Olfinas Vera (November 15, 1888 – August 15, 1956) was a Filipino politician, judge and film studio executive. Vera served as Representative from Albay's 2nd district from 1916 to 1919, Governor of Albay from 1919 to 1922, and Senator of the Philippines from the 6th district during the 7th to 10th Legislatures (1925–1935) and for the whole nation in the 1st Congress (1946–1949). He served in the seventh branch of the Court of First Instance of Manila as judge ad interim. Beyond politics, he was also the head of the production studio Sampaguita Pictures which he handed over to his son-in-law Jose R. Perez in the 1950s. In 2004, the Quezon City Council honored Vera by renaming Granada Street, which runs through the old Sampaguita Pictures estate, after him. The Senate of the Philippines () is the upper house of Congress of the Philippines, Congress, the bicameral legislature of the Philippines, with the House of Representatives of the Philippines, House of Representatives as the lower house. The Senate is composed of 24 senators who are elected at-large (the country forms one district in Philippine Senate elections, senatorial elections) under a Plurality block voting, plurality-at-large voting system. Senators serve six-year terms with a maximum of two consecutive terms, with half of the senators elected in staggered elections every three years. When the Senate was restored by the Constitution of the Philippines, 1987 Constitution, the 24 senators who were elected in 1987 served until 1992. Manuel Acuña Roxas (; January 1, 1892 – April 15, 1948) was a Filipino lawyer and politician who served as the fifth president of the Philippines from 1946 until his death in 1948. He served briefly as the third and last President of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from May 28, 1946, to July 4, 1946, and became the first President of the Independent History of the Philippines (1946–65), Third Philippine Republic after the United States ceded its sovereignty over the Philippines. The Colegio de San Juan de Letran (), also referred to by its acronym CSJL, is a private Catholic coeducational basic and higher education institution owned and run by the friars of the Order of Preachers in Intramuros, Manila, Philippines. Granada Street (also known as Senator Jose O. Vera Street) is a road in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. It runs from Nicanor Domingo Street, as an extension of Gilmore Avenue, to the boundary with San Juan, where it terminates at Bonny Serrano Avenue and becomes Ortigas Avenue. The street is sometimes considered part of Ortigas Avenue by motorists. Route description The land on which the street lies used to be part of an estate owned by the family of José O. Sampaguita Pictures was a Philippine film production company. It was named for the Philippine national flower, sampaguita. Though no longer functioning, the company's Sampaguita Compound remains in Quezon City. History Sampaguita Pictures was established in the last quarter of 1937. Its first feature-length film was ''Bituing Marikit'', starring Elsa Oria and Rogelio dela Rosa. It was a box-office hit. The company continued to make films in the action, musical, horror and suspense genres. Before World War II began, and the Japanese occupied the Philippines, several Sampaguita films enjoyed box office success in the region.
