José Molina (mayor)
José Molina ( a.k.a. José Molinas) was Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1822. Biography Molina was born in Cataluña, Spain, around 1782. In 1827 he was a landowner and slave owner, and owned an hacienda. He lived in Ponce's Barrio Oeste (now 018known as Barrio Segundo). He married Petrona Villar, from Ponce, and had seven children: Maria Socorro (ca. 1813), Carmen (ca. 1821), Felicita (ca. 1823), Rita (ca. 1825), Margarita (ca. 1826), Jose Maria (ca. 1828), and Dolores (ca. 1829). Molina is best remembered for heading a collection of funds to be donated by well-to-do residents in Barrio Playa for the construction of a watch tower on the east side of Barrio Playa, at Point Peñoncillo, in order to add to the security of the Port of Ponce which, at the time, was being threatened by pirates. José Casimiro Ortíz De La Renta
José Casimiro Ortíz de la Renta (ca. 1760 – ca. 1830) was List of mayors of Ponce, Puerto Rico, Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, during two short periods in 1821. Background José Casimiro Ortíz de la Renta was a descendant of the founder of San Germán, Puerto Rico, San Germán, on the hills of Santa Marta, next to Río Guanajibo, in 1573. Ortíz de la Renta is best remembered as the ''Sargento Mayor'' (Sergeant major) who, with two Company (military unit), companies totaling 293 men, provided guard for the defenses of the city of Ponce during the April 1797 Battle of San Juan (1797), British attack on San Juan. Barrio Playa
Barrio Playa, also known as Playa de Ponce, Ponce Playa, or La Playa, is one of the thirty-one barrios that comprise the municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Along with Bucaná, Canas, Vayas, and Capitanejo, Playa is one of the municipality's five coastal barrios. Barrio Playa also incorporates several islands, the largest of which is Caja de Muertos. It was founded in 1831. Location Playa is an urban barrio located in the southern region of the municipality, within the limits of the city of Ponce, south of the traditional center of the city at Plaza Las Delicias, and on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. It is located at 17.9839°N 66.6128°W, and it has an elevation of 10 feet. José Mercado (mayor)
Francisco José de Mercado (ca. 1762ca. 1842) was interim mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from early in 1822 to 31 December 1822. Background Mercado was the son of Joseph de Mercado, who was "Alcalde de la Santa Hermandad" in 1757 (San German) and ''teniente a guerra'' (Ponce) in 1763. Mayoral term While acting as the maximum civil authority in Ponce during 1822, Mercado was interim mayor. As such, he was finishing off José Molina's term as a constitutional mayor. Mercado took over leadership of the town from Jose Ortiz de la Renta and, at the end of his term, handed over leadership to Jose Ortiz de la Renta again. A ''hacienda'' ( or ; or ) is an estate (or '' finca''), similar to a Roman '' latifundium'', in Spain and the former Spanish Empire.
