José Luis Appleyard
José Luis Appleyard (5 May 1927 – 1998) was a Paraguayan poet, playwright, lawyer, journalist and publisher. Childhood and youth He was born in Asunción, the capital city of Paraguay. He completed his primary studies in "la Escuela Normal de Profesores". He attended high school at the Colegio de San José de Asunción, but finished at Colegio San Martín, de Buenos Aires, Argentina. He studied law at Universidad Nacional de Asunción and after graduating, he worked as a lawyer for approximately ten years. After this, he decided to dedicate himself to journalism and poetry. First steps He was one of the favourite disciples of César Alonso de las Heras, a priest in Colegio de San José. Father Alonso is a fundamental figure regarding the diffusion of Spanish poetry of what are called the '98 and '27 generations. Asunción
Asunción (, ) is the capital and the largest city of Paraguay. The city stands on the eastern bank of the Paraguay River, almost at the confluence of this river with the Pilcomayo River. Maneco Galeano
Maneco Galeano ( Puerto Pinasco, May 13, 1945 - December 9, 1980), was a Paraguayan musician, songwriter and journalist. Childhood and youth Son of W. Antonio Galeano and Ana Mieres, his real name was Felix, after his grandfather on his father side, and Roberto, after his grandfather, on his mother side. He was two years when the cruel civil war of `47 started. He always remember his father, was on his way to prison for defending his principles and ideals, on the harbor of Puerto Pinasco, waving his handkerchief, blond and happy. In this time he was given his first guitar, a toy one, and he enjoyed singing songs he imagined himself with it. At the beginning of 1948, his family decides to move to Asuncion. The National Prize for Literature (''Premio Nacional de Literatura'') is awarded biennially, in odd-numbered years, by the , to "books in the genres of poetry, narrative, essay, or theater, written in Spanish or Guaraní, by Paraguayan or foreign authors with at least five years of residence in Paraguay." It was established in 1990 by Law No. 97/90, which also created the National Prize for Science, awarded in even-numbered years. This was updated by Law No. 1149 in 1997. Areguá
Areguá is a creative city and the capital of Central Department in Paraguay. It is known for its production of strawberry products, pottery, colonial architecture and historic cobblestone streets. Rafael Barrett
Rafael Ángel Jorge Julián Barrett y Álvarez de Toledo (1876–1910) was a Spanish journalist and writer, and a major figure in 20th century Paraguayan literature. Biography Rafael Barrett was born on 7 January 1876, in the Cantabrian city of Torrelavega; he was the son of the Englishman George Barrett and Carmen Alvarez de Toledo, whose family had distant links to the Spanish nobility. In his early life, Barrett studied languages and learned how to play the piano. He began a degree in engineering at university in Madrid, which he did not complete. When he was 26 years old, he moved to Latin America, where he sought to engage with causes for social justice. In 1903, Barrett settled in the Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he worked as a journalist.
