José Augusto (footballer)
José Augusto Pinto de Almeida (; born 13 April 1937), known as José Augusto, is a Portuguese retired football winger and manager. He played most of his career with Benfica, for which he appeared in 369 competitive matches and scored 174 goals, winning 13 titles including eight Primeira Liga championships and two European Cups. He was dubbed the "Portuguese Garrincha" by Gabriel Hanot. A Portugal international over one decade, José Augusto represented the nation at the 1966 World Cup. He later worked as a manager for more than 30 years. Club career Born in Barreiro, Setúbal District, José Augusto started playing with local F.C. Barreiro () is a city and a municipality in the Setúbal District in Portugal. The population in 2021 was 78,345, in an area of . It is a region belonging to the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. The 1961–62 European Cup was the seventh season of the European Cup, UEFA's premier club football tournament. The competition was won by Benfica for the second time in a row, beating Real Madrid 5–3 in the final at the Olympisch Stadion, Amsterdam, on 2 May 1962. This outcome meant that Real Madrid became the first team to win and lose European Cup final. 1960–61 European Cup
The 1960–61 European Cup was the sixth season of the European Cup, UEFA's premier club football tournament. The competition was won by Benfica, who beat Barcelona 3–2 in the final at Wankdorf Stadium in Bern, on 31 May 1961. It was the first time that five-time winners Real Madrid did not make it to the final, when they were knocked out by eventual first-time finalists Barcelona in the first round. Benfica was the first Portuguese team to reach the final and to win the tournament. For the first time a team from Norway participated. António Simões
António Simões da Costa (; born 14 December 1943), known as Simões, is a Portuguese former footballer who played as a left winger. He spent 14 professional seasons with Benfica, playing 449 official games and scoring 72 goals. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he represented several teams in the United States, and subsequently worked as a manager in both continents. Gabriel Hanot (; 6 November 1889 – 10 August 1968) was a French association football, footballer and journalist (the editor of ''L'Équipe''). The UEFA Champions League, European Cup—which became the UEFA Champions League—was the brainchild of Hanot, as was the Ballon d'Or, an award that honours the male player deemed to have performed the best over the previous year. Biography He made 12 appearances for the France national football team, with his debut coming on 8 March 1908 against Switzerland.
