José A. Vélez Jr.
José Antonio Vélez Jr. (born March 23, 1963, in Santurce, Puerto Rico) is a jockey who competes in American Thoroughbred horse races. The son of jockey José Vélez Sr., he began his riding career at Atlantic City Race Course in 1980 and won his first race later that year at the Meadowlands. He was the leading apprentice at Hialeah Park in 1982, leading rider at Gulfstream Park that year and top jockey at Calder Race Course in 1983 and 1985. Velez was inducted into the Calder Race Course Hall of Fame in 1997. In 1998, Velez won the Meadowlands riding title. In 2000, he captured the Maryland Million Classic, the Monmouth Breeders' Cup Oaks, and the Meadowlands Cup. He rode Sei Me to a runner-up performance in the $6 million Dubai World Cup in 2002. That year he won 10 stakes races at Monmouth Park, including the Philip H. Iselin Breeders' Cup Handicap, a race he won again in 2005. Calder Race Course
Calder Casino is a casino located in Miami Gardens, Florida. It includes slots, electronic table games, and bingo. The casino opened in 2010 and features a gaming floor with 1,100 slot machines, including video poker, as well as electronic roulette and blackjack. Balto Star (foaled March 7, 1998, in Kentucky) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and the winner of the 2003 United Nations Stakes. Career Balto Star's first race was on September 16, 2000, at Belmont Park, where he finished in 8th place. He did not pick up his first win until January 1st, 2001, at Aqueduct. He picked up another win at the Aqueduct on February 18, 2001, then won his first graded race, the Turfway Spiral Stakes on March 24, 2001. He then won his next graded race, the 2001 Arkansas Derby. This would be his last graded in for almost two years, until he came back with a win at the 2003 Whirlaway Handicap. In July, he picked up a win at the 2003 United Nations Stakes. Group Races
Group races, also known as Pattern races, or Graded races in some jurisdictions, are the highest level of races in Thoroughbred horse racing. They include most of the world's iconic races, such as the Derby, Irish Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in Europe, the Melbourne Cup in Australia, and the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup races in the United States. Monmouth Park
Monmouth Park Racetrack is an American race track for thoroughbred horse racing in Oceanport, New Jersey, Oceanport, New Jersey, United States. It is owned by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority and is operated under a five-year lease as a partnership with Darby Development, LLC. Monmouth Park's marquee event is the Haskell Invitational, named after Amory L. Haskell. The Haskell was first run in 1968 as a handicap, but was made into an Invitational Handicap in 1981. Atlantic City Race Course
The Atlantic City Race Course (ACRC), formerly the Atlantic City Race Track, was a Thoroughbred horse race track located in the Mays Landing section of Hamilton Township, in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. The track is located off the Black Horse Pike (U.S. Route 322) next to the Hamilton Mall. Despite the name, the facility is located from Atlantic City.
