José A. Rodríguez Cruz
José A. "Chely" Rodríguez Cruz (10 July 1961 – 21 January 2024) was a Puerto Rican politician who was the mayor of Hatillo. Rodríguez Cruz was affiliated with the Popular Democratic Party (PPD). He earned a bachelor's degree from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico The Inter American University of Puerto Rico (Spanish: ''Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico''; often abbreviated to ''UIPR'' or ''Inter'') is a private Christian university with its main campus in San Germán, Puerto Rico. It also has ... Arecibo Campus. He served as mayor of Hatillo since 2005 until his resignation in 2022 due to health problems. Rodríguez Cruz died from kidney failure on 21 January 2024 at the age of 62. He was buried at the New Hatillo Municipal Cemetery in Hatillo. Hatillo, Puerto Rico
Hatillo () is a town and municipality located in Puerto Rico's north coast, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Lares and Utuado to the south, Camuy to the west, and Arecibo to the east. According to the 2000 US Census Hatillo is spread over nine barrios and Hatillo Pueblo (the downtown area and the administrative center of the city). It is part of the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Agustín Ruiz Miranda, a Canarian immigrant, founded Hatillo on approximately ten (a cuerda is 0.97 acre, also called a Spanish acre) in 1823. Miranda granted this land on the condition that public buildings be erected and wide streets be built, and that the remaining land be sold or used for homes.
