Josias Du Pré
Josias Du Pré (1721–1780) was a London merchant, a director of the East India Company and Governor of Madras. Life Du Pré was born in South Carolina, the son of Cornelius Dupré. He joined the civil service of the East India Company in 1752, as a factor, and rose through a succession of positions. He spent a period in England in the 1760s, and married there. Sir Robert Palk, 1st Baronet
Sir Robert Palk, 1st Baronet (December 1717 – 29 April 1798) of Haldon House in the parish of Kenn, Devon, Kenn, in Devon, England, was an officer of the British East India Company who served as Governor of the Madras Presidency. In England he served as Member of Parliament, MP for Ashburton (UK Parliament constituency), Ashburton in 1767 and between 1774 and 1787 and for Wareham (UK Parliament constituency), Wareham, between 1768 and 1774. Du Pré Alexander, 2nd Earl Of Caledon
Du Pré Alexander, 2nd Earl of Caledon (14 December 1777 – 8 April 1839), styled The Honourable Du Pré Alexander from 1790 to 1800 and Viscount Alexander from 1800 to 1802, was an Irish peer, landlord and colonial administrator, and was the second child and only son of James Alexander, 1st Earl of Caledon. Education and inheritance He was educated from 1790 to 1796 at Eton College in England and later at Christ Church, Oxford. He was elected member of parliament for Newtownards in 1800 and sat in the Irish House of Commons until the Act of Union in 1801. In the latter year, he was appointed High Sheriff of Armagh. He succeeded to the title of Earl of Caledon on the death of his father in 1802 and was elected a Representative Peer for Ireland in 1804. This is a list of the governors, agents, and presidents of colonial Madras, initially of the English East India Company, up to the end of British colonial rule in 1947. English Agents In 1639, the grant of Madras to the English was finalized between the factors of the Masulipatnam (now Machilipatnam) factory (trading post), represented by Francis Day, and the Raja of Chandragiri. In 1640, Andrew Cogan, the chief of the Masulipatnam factory, made his way to Madras in the company of Francis Day and the English and Indian employees of the Masulipatnam factory. The Agency of Madras was established on 1 March 1640 and Cogan was made the first Agent. The official title was 'Governor of Fort St George' and the Governor was usually referred to as Agent. Charles Bourchier (governor)
Charles Bourchier (died 1810) was an official of the East India Company and was Governor of Madras from 1767 to 1770. Bourchier was the elder son of Richard Bourchier, Governor of Bombay and his wife Sarah Hawkins, daughter of George Hawkins, of Clayhill, Epsom, Surrey. He joined the service of the East India Company. Bourchier was appointed Governor of Madras on 25 January 1767. He held the post until 31 January 1770. Bourchier married Anne Foley, daughter of Thomas Foley, M.P. for Herefordshire, on 6 May 1776. In about 1783 he purchased Colney House at Shenley, Hertfordshire, and built a mansion at a cost of about £53,000. Josias Porcher
Josias Du Pré Porcher (''ca.'' 1761 – 4 May 1820) was an English politician. After following his uncle into the service of the British East India Company, he became wealthy and returned to England, although he was frustrated in an attempt to obtain a directorship of the company. His wealth and his friendship with Du Pré Alexander, 2nd Earl of Caledon, Lord Caledon enabled him to sit in Parliament for various boroughs until 1818, although he was not a particularly conspicuous member. He died at his country home in Devonshire in 1820. Childhood and Indian career Born about 1761, Josias was the third son of Paul Porcher, a planter of Charleston, South Carolina, and his wife Esther Du Pré. Sir Philip Grey Egerton, 10th Baronet
Sir Philip de Malpas Grey Egerton, 10th Baronet FRS (13 November 1806 – 5 April 1881) was an English palaeontologist and Conservative politician from the Egerton family. He sat in the House of Commons variously between 1830 and his death in 1881. Early life Egerton was the son of Sir Philip Grey Egerton, 9th Baronet and his wife Rebecca Du Pre, daughter of Josias Du Pre of Wilton Park, Beaconsfield. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated BA in 1828. While at college his interest in geology was aroused by the lectures of William Buckland, and by his acquaintance with William D. Conybeare. He inherited the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1829. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1831, and was a trustee of the British Museum. The Reverend Sir Philip Grey-Egerton, 9th Baronet (6 July 1767 – 12 December 1829), was a 19th-century Anglican clergyman and landowner, who succeeded to his family baronetcy and served as Rector of Tarporley and Malpas, Cheshire. Sir John Blackwood, 2nd Baronet (1721 – 27 February 1799) was an Irish politician and baronet. He was the eldest son of Sir Robert Blackwood, 1st Baronet of BallyleidyDebrett, John (1820).
