Joshua Sheng
Joshua Sheng is an American chess grandmaster. Chess career In 2018, Sheng was ranked as the #1 junior in Southern California. In August 2019, his Elo rating briefly surpassed 2500, satisfying the minimum rating requirement for the Grandmaster title. In October 2021, he earned his final norm at the Vezerkepzo tournament in Budapest. His Grandmaster title was finalized later that year. Sheng co-authored the book ''Mastering Chess Logic'' with Guannan "Terry" Song, a Canadian FIDE Master. In August 2022, he was defeated by IM Semen Khanin in the 122nd Annual U. S. Open Chess Championship in Rancho Mirage, California. Grandmaster (GM) is a Chess title, title awarded to chess players by the world chess organization FIDE. Apart from World Chess Championship, World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain. FIDE titles are awarded by the international chess governing body FIDE (''Fédération Internationale des Échecs'') for outstanding performance. The highest such title is Grandmaster (GM). Semen "Sam" Khanin is a Russian chess grandmaster. Chess career Khanin began playing chess at the age of 5, and won multiple Russian Youth Championships. He was mentored by Artur Gabrielian. In January 2019, Khanin took the lead at the sixth round of the Moscow Open. He later earned his second GM norm after the tournament. In September 2020, Khanin (then an International Master) won the Panchenko Memorial on tiebreaks ahead of grandmasters Dmitry Kokarev and Maksim Chigaev.
