Joseph Ouédraogo
Joseph Ouédraogo (11 January 1919 – 1988) was a Burkinabé trade unionist and politician, active during the last years of the French Upper Volta and subsequently in the Republic of Upper Volta. Biography Joseph Ouédraogo was born on 11 January 1919 in Saaba, French West Africa. From 1929 to 1933 he received his primary education at the Catholic Mission School of Ouagadougou and before undertaking Secondary studies at the Pabré Department, Pabré Undergraduate Seminary from 1933 to 1939. Ouédraogo became a Catholic labor activist and was a member of the Voltaic Union after World War II. French Upper Volta
Upper Volta () was a colony of French West Africa established in 1919 in the territory occupied by present-day Burkina Faso. It was formed from territories that had been part of the colonies of Upper Senegal and Niger and the Côte d'Ivoire. The colony was dissolved on 5 September 1932, with parts being administered by the Côte d'Ivoire, French Sudan and the Colony of Niger. After World War II, on 4 September 1947, the colony was revived as a part of the French Union, with its previous boundaries. On 11 December 1958, it was reconstituted as the self-governing Republic of Upper Volta within the French Community, and two years later on 5 August 1960, it attained full independence. On 4 August 1984, the name was changed to Burkina Faso. The name Upper Volta indicates that the country contains the upper part of the Volta River. Maurice Yaméogo
Maurice Nawalagmba Yaméogo (31 December 1921 – 15 September 1993) was the first President of the Republic of Upper Volta, now called Burkina Faso, from 1960 until 1966. "Monsieur Maurice" embodied the Voltaic state at the moment of independence. However, his political ascension did not occur without difficulties. As a member of the colonial administration from 1946, Maurice Yaméogo found a place for himself in the busy political landscape of Upper Volta thanks to his skill as a speaker. In May 1957, during the formation of the first Upper Voltaic government instituted under the Loi Cadre Defferre, he joined the coalition government formed by Ouezzin Coulibaly, as minister for agriculture and a member of the Voltaic Democratic Movement (MDV). The Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) was an open source intelligence component of the Central Intelligence Agency's Directorate of Science and Technology. 1978 Upper Volta Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in the Republic of Upper Volta on 14 May 1978, with a second round on 28 May after no candidate won more than 50% in the first round. They were the country's first multi-party presidential elections, the previous elections in 1965 having Maurice Yaméogo as the sole candidate. They were also the first presidential elections held under a revised Constitution adopted a year earlier. Incumbent president Sangoulé Lamizana ran as an independent with the support of the Voltaic Democratic Union–African Democratic Rally. Lamizana was the leading candidate in the first round, before winning with 56% of the vote in the second round. Voter turnout was 35% in the first round and 44% in the second. The unicameral National Assembly is the legislative body of Burkina Faso. In 1995, it became the lower house of a bicameral parliament, but the upper house (Chamber of Representatives of Burkina Faso, Chamber of Representatives) was abolished in 2002. The upper house was to have been restored under the name "Senate of Burkina Faso, Senate" in the June 2012 constitutional amendments. Voltaic Democratic Union
The African Democratic Rally (''Rassemblement Démocratique Africain'') is a political party in Burkina Faso. It was formed in 1957 as the Voltaic section of the African Democratic Rally (RDA) and was originally known as the Voltaic Democratic Union-African Democratic Rally (UDV-RDA). In 1960, UDV-RDA formed a civilian dictatorship in Upper Volta until it was overthrown in the 1966 military coup, later returning to electoral politics. Today, it is part of the Alliance for Democracy and Federation – African Democratic Rally, the largest of the many opposition parties in Burkina Faso. French Community
The French Community () was the constitutional organization set up in October 1958 between France and its remaining African colonies, then in the process of decolonization. It replaced the French Union, which had reorganized the colonial empire in 1946. While the Community remained formally in existence until 1995, when the French Parliament officially abolished it, it had effectively ceased to exist and function by the end of 1960, by which time all the African members had declared their independence and left it. The Community had a short lifespan because, while the African members did not refuse it, they refrained from real involvement.
